A 722.6 gearbox dipstick is what you need. You can buy a genuine one for around £40 I think but the cheap ebay ones will do the job. They are classed as a tool and so they will stick out of the top quite a bit and are not designed to stay in the dipstick tube.

The lump at the end of the plastic read section is the stop that sets the dipstick for the correct reading . The extra long handle is for different length 722.6 dipstick tubes on different vehicles

You can fill through the dipstick tube and oil is nothing overly special. MB236.14 is the spec and is easy to find from eBay, ECP, GSF, Amazon etc.

If you do have the 5g gearbox with the dipstick tube in the engine bay , you fill the gearbox via that tube

As long as it's MB236.14 there are no issues mixing brands.

Don't forget there is a filter in the sump that needs changing . There is loads on YouTube , just search 722.6 gearbox/Transmision oil change or similar

i use the flexible certain rail stuff metal coiled stuff about 4mm in dia, plastic coated and marked a level in mm given to me on here some time ago. they sell it in BandQ less than £3 if i remember. have not yet tried to see level on ML250 but it fits in my w208 no issue, of curse depends on knowing what the level in mm should be at a given temp.
