The EML light came on in our E350 CDI - had the code read and it’s DPF. We’ve not been far in the car recently so we know why it’s got to this point - job change has meant hardly any long runs.
Anyway our mechanic reset the code and told me to go for a long run. I gave it an energetic run but only for about 8 miles and the EML light came back on the next day.
Question is if I take it on a long run now will it run the regen or will I need the code cleared before I do that?

In general cars won't do a regen while they detect a fault.
Your best bet is probably to find a respected independent specialist with Star who can identify the issue and if necessary force a regen.

@MALCOLM JOHNSON
I was a Snap On professional reader and it as the guy was in a hurry we just saw it said DPF and he said that was a fairly common problem and if he cleared the code to take it for a long drive. I should’ve just taken it on the motorway for 30 miles.

@LostKiwi
That’s really the question I need to answer. Will it regen with the EML on?

My EML light came on with star diagnosing DPF fault.
Turned out the DPF sensor was at fault.
Once this was changed, £25 part, manual regen initiated, the car has been perfect since.
Don't always presume it's the actual DPF that's causing the fault

just for interest is there a list of faults/codes that will prevent a makers regen. and WONT alert the driver to that fact via EML ?

A bad thermostat is one. If they can't get to normal operating temperature a regen won't happen.

SO! there are a number of, that will prevent a regen, create a code and not necessarily advise the driver ?

I guess there's a clue in the list of input parameters to be met for a DPF Regeneration in the list of live Data Streams associated with the DPF in my scanner, herewith is a frame just prior to a Regeneration starting, at first I discounted the odometer readings but then realised my last two Regenerations were 401 then 402 miles apart?
ETA Mileage figures are wrong please ignore.

B19/9(Temperature sensor upstream of diesel particulate filter) ----- 206°C
Air mass ----- 648mg/Hub
B28/8 (Diesel particulate filter differential pressure sensor) ----- 0.02bar

I once had a soot accumulation code came up due to a EML for a catalyst sensor while I was about shopping with the family. Needles to say there was a lot of swearing going on. When we got home I had a look under the bonnet and the engine was red hot I mean you couldnt touch it it was that hot you could feel the heat on your face coming from the dpf area. The car had obviously been trying to regen even with the eml on. I imagine these were failed attempts at regens. Soooo..... I made sure I had over plenty juice got her up to temp cleared the code. Went on the motorway at 60mph in 5th with cruise control on for roughly 40 minutes sitting at around 2000rpm. And since then the code has never been back on and the engine was cool enough to touch When I arrived home. Its been around 7 weeks now and roughly 1000 miles driven since with no issues. Dpf issues are best dealt with ASAP in my opinion.

Well I had the codes cleared and did a long run down to the coast at the weekend and the light came back on so there’s possibly a sensor fault. I’ll get it plugged into STAR this week to get a clearer picture.

update your profile to show your location , that way someone can recommend good Indys in your area (unless of course it's Michigan ?....you are on your own with that one :D)

I have a brilliant local Indy I’ve used for years - Ian @ Star in Caversham. Apart from Silchester Merc who I use if STAR can’t accommodate my timescales I wouldn’t really use anyone else.

This is what’s come up Lower limit value of component b28/8 DPF was dropped below slash not reached. So Does that mean DPF blocked?

Turns out it was the sensor in the end - fixed for under £100 so not a bad result.
