I've a 3.0 litre OM642 engine in a Jeep Grand Cherokee that occasionally throws up the electronic throttle malfunction light and goes into limp mode. Reset by the ignition and no codes stored.
Now at the stage I'm thinking of trying to eliminate this by cleaning the throttle body.
Any advice on how to dismantle and clean would be greatly appreciated.

Adding a fuel cleaner to the tank first as the easiest option ?

Morning Wighty,
Yes, probably a good place to start but I've this idea that the butterfly in the throttle body sticks now and again (been looking at youtube) and needs a good clean. You know what it's like, an itch you've just got to scratch.
You ready for the hols yet?

I know exactly what you mean . It's funny we both pretty much have the same cars , as far as M271 and OM642 :D .
Busy prepping the car as we speak , off to sunny Calais on Friday morning :)

Indeed, great minds and all that, may well be the exception in my case though.
Temperature set to be in the 30's C over here at the week end, so just make sure the air con is icy otherwise it may get a little heated in the car!
Safe and happy motoring.

No! There’s too much carbon around apparently, the government says we should be carbon neutral!

It would make it Carbon Neutral, that's the whole point :p:p:p

I'm looking at a few different aerosols of throttle body/carburettor/egr/brake cleaner to see which is the best to neutralise that carbon. But I first have to find how to dismantle the throttle as I'm no fan of just squirting the stuff down the inlet with the engine running.

I had mine done professionally, no problems if there is an issue then, and haven't had any

Have it "Carbon Cleaned"

The last car I saw that had been carbon cleaned had a large lump of carbon underneath a valve and catastrophic engine failure as a result. Im sure there are lots of success stories, but the risks are high IMO of liquid mising through an inlet system disloging carbon that has to be burnt in the combustion chamber and then kicked out through the exhaust.

A throttle butterfly, just like an EGR valve on this engine is electronic. If it doesnt meet its targets usually its because the electronic motors are failing as opposed to the pin/needle/flap not meeting its correct value or position. I would be willing to bet my house that even though there will be a small amount of carbon around the moving part, it will still be in its correct position and free from siezure.

I have never had an electronic throttle failure on a 642, ever. So I am wondering if the op is actually barking up the right tree?

Using STAR you could actuate the components testing their operation without actually taking anything apart.

Only if you captured it. You would need a bag. If carbon escapes it’s very bad, so they say.

Seeing as all known life on the planet is based upon carbon, it makes one wonder how it’s all survived really.
