Rather than the little hot hatches, look at the value obtainable in a Ford Focus! Cheaper than same year fiesta!

£1500 will get quite a lot of car actually. Loads on AT and look on FB as well as Gumtree. also before buying check insurance costs, they can cost the same as the car in the first year

Thanks Jon, nice car. I know he's going to want something bigger, he's looked at the Skoda Fabia before, but again the more powerful diesel. Maybe he can look at the 206 or something similar.

But the OP is talking about a Punto ???? I think all Fiats are great little cars and good fun to drive.
I was agreeing with your post above mine about Panda's - I like them (especially the 4x4)

I suspect no street cred though Jon

Skoda don't have the bad rep they did to our generation, bl**dy good cars these days, SWMBO's sister and Brother in Law have just got a Karoq and Kodiaq, previously they had a BMW 120d and 335D both M Sport, they love them, very impressive cars and ridiculously cheap to run

It's him that needs convincing Jon, not me :D. Personally I would rather pay a bit more for the VW badge and the latest VW technology :)

I know, there are a couple down here that look good on bigger wheels and tinted windows driven by yoofs

All the same now

I've managed to persuade him to drop the idea of the Punto, used the zero crash rating angle, and the fact that the seller knew nothing about the car.
Next thing he says, "Audi A3's look ok and cheap to insure (£1700)". So I asked him to get a quote for a nice blue 2009 Fiesta 1.25 Zetec, surprise surprise, £600 cheaper!!!! These kids.

You won't get cheaper than a ford for parts generally

Insurance will be the determinant for him (certainly if a Fiesta is north of a grand )
Keep it under 1.25 and go for something with some crash protection (and air con - da yoof of today will very soon tire of a car without)
Then there's the audio......

He's happy with paying £1000 for the first year, it will drop fairly fast after that, plus he lives at home with little expense. I've told him that I can help with the basic service items, he's keen to do some of this himself. Audio wise, he'll probably fit an Android system. Plus I think the Fiesta looks ok for a young lad (then he found the ST!!)

I know, what's a grand eh?
A top of the range phone these days, that's all

We actually put a neighbour's son in an ageing Saab a couple of years ago when he got his first job that required a modest commute.
Single mother was terrified for his safety but a non turbo 9-3 won the day based on crash record and size.
He has since sold it on to a friend and both loved it.
And bizarrely A plan got him a quote cheaper than his mates in C1s etc because it was such an uncool car (so uncool, it was actually 'sic' - which was somehow good.....)

When my Granddaughter was learning to drive we bought her a Renault Clio 1.2 for her to practice her driving skills. The insurance for her at 18 years old was £600 which was not too bad under the circumstances. When she passed her test the insurance went up to £1600 !. They explained that the reason was that she would now be driving un-accompanied and therefore represented a higher risk. :(

My daughter did a bit of research and found that she could get her a new Citroen C1 which would include servicing and insurance for £300 per month. It didn't cover road fund tax because that was Zero. So that was the route we took. We split the cost three ways between us, her Mum and Dad and of course her. She now has three hears no claims and she can buy the car she has had from new for £4,600. :)

She has only done 15,000 miles in the three years, I have polished it twice and the car is as brand new. She is happy with the purchase price and is going for it. :)

It's not the greatest car out there but it is one she can afford to run as she is at Uni doing her Masters. Its worked out well :)

Maybe a route the your nephew might want to consider ?

Thanks and good advice, I've left him looking at cars online, he'll get what he wants, hopefully his mum and dad will offer some advice but I won't hold my breath!!!

That is what our son has now , 1.25 Zetec three door Fiesta.

Nice wee motor but just watch the Fiesta tax bands as some are £0 / £30 / £100+ depending on engine size and year - 1.0 Ecoboost , 1.0 Zetec , 1.25 Zetec.

A Fiesta is a great place to start :D

I hired a new 3 door last year “ST Line” and it had loads of toys and went very well for what was a 1.0 eco boost I think.

Come a long way since my 1981 1.1L...
