Tensioner or stretched chain ?

Ive purchased a new tensioner fir the 170 , i got me thinking , the car runs great , pulls well , starts well so i feel that doing the tensioner should be ok , the chain clearly cant have stretched as there are no issues with the cars drive

if all ok i would leave alone,or until the time taken is not important i did my 170cdi recently just for peace of mind. sometimes with age the o ring inside leaks the oil when stopped hot and then chain not tensioned correctly so if yrs same design changing it no bad thing

ive just read an interesting post on slkworld , it claims that the noise im hearing could in fact be the VVT system and to diagnose it means simply pressing the brake firmly 3 times and hold while starting the car , im going to try this tomorrow , just for the hell of it

What, you did not mention any noise in the first post. Any recording or description would be a help.

be careful with a noisy chain !does it go after start up ?

oh I know all too well what a noisy chain can do pal , a poorly fitted kit on my VXR taught me an awful lot but that's another story , the noise I have been getting sounds more like tappets to me ( metallic gargling ) and hence why Ive been theorising

well if you have tensioner,and the time ,you can likely rule one out as a source of yr issue ...
