After a lot of researching I finally splashed out on a Silverline 1200W 180mm Sander/Polisher.

Ok, not the most expensive unit out there but, the reviews were almost exclusively very good.

This one was on special with three polishing sponges and a wool polishing mop all for the princely sum of £62.05, lol. Which being the proverbial tight assed Scotsman suited my wallet very well.

Now, I desperately await a dry day and non workshift weekend (hers, not mine) to get Swmbo's red Non Merc (why does it always have to be red cars that fade so much, even with good care?) done. I am actually quite excited and very much looking forward to getting it done. (I know, sad git, lol).

I'll post some pics of the finished job in due course, in the meantime here's what I got for my dosh.

I see, practice on hers first.;);)

I hand polished mine last week and then ceramic coated it. So, it doesn’t need done.
Where as hers, being red, has a penchant for turning pink and needs attention.
Aye, ok, captured, I’m gonnae practice on hers first

Update :-
Well I was lucky with the weather today plus, Swmbo's shift pattern was changed at the last moment so, she's not working tonight.

I can play with her Un-Merc today weather permitting.

I had to wait until midday to start unfortunately, and the car had to be cleaned properly before I could try out the new polisher. So, I didn't get finished until 7.00 pm. Gods, I ache all over, lol.:rolleyes:

But, what a result! You can actually make out the clouds over head in one of the shots, I thought it was a fault with my camera phone at first, lol.

I bought a Silverline orbital sander/polisher a little while back and am very pleased with it. Practically all the tools I buy now are silverline, they are cheap but good. Never had a problem with one yet anyway. Their spanners and sockets are good as well.

Looks like a good job, very satisfying working on cars that haven't been done before, my wife's black Yaris comes up well.

What polish did you use? I bought the same set up but with the addition of some farecla G3 / G10 and I got some farecla glaze .... I tried it out on my black Smart car first and the G3 sort of lumped up on the panels ..... I had a small rub on the side of my E350 (they kind of thing that you get from driving too close to a bush) which I buffed out Ok but I ended up using Meguires hand polish to finish them off

If using a paint correction fluid like Farecla it helps to have a water spray bottle handy and keep misting the panel as the correction fluid drys out. I'm still using AG Bodyshop (NLA, but Ihave stock!) with my Kestrel DAS6, it's more fluid than the Farecla stuff I've seen but I still have a water spray bottle handy!

It probably didn’t help matters that it was a hot day when I did it ... I will try the water spray next time and not in the sun

You defo need a water spray to help lubricate the paint/polish and, you're right, doing the job on a hot day is NOT recommended.

That way lie's damage, i.e. burnt paintwork and 'orrible swirls.

What polish did you use?

AGSRP (AutoGlym Super Resin Polish) Combined with a spray of plain cold tap water, oh, the joys ;) of living in a soft water area, no limescale contamination, you can use tap water without worry or filtration. :D

SRP has so much chalk filler in it, it's almost a paint correction fluid if used with a DA polisher! However, keep it away from any rubber seals or small gaps, as you'll have white streaks of chalk - that's why I've ditched SRP for 3M Perfect-it!!

A friend who's a pro detailer let me in on that one, like you, I was rather surprised. However, he did say that we are lucky in our part of the world because the tap water is so soft. You defo couldn't get away with it in a high lime content area he reckoned, without filtering it.
