He is a 1964 Land Rover fitted with a 1970's Mercedes 300D engine.
We are having a couple of engine issues so I thought I would ask here?

Well that would be less reliable and double the fuel bill.

The previous owner rewired part of it after it caught fire! The glow plugs are 9v but connected to 12v so not good, the relay is an old starter solenoid, the diesel system sucks loads of air in when parked for a day or two.
Thats the engine, the rest isn't to bad, loads of wrong parts on it but once we sort the engine the rest we can work on as we use it, its actually my son's car but he cant insure it until he is 21, he has been looking for a long time but perfect original ones sell for a fortune, this is the only one he could afford, its cheap as the rivet counters won't like it having the wrong grill, engine etc, he wanted one with a non standard engine as its almost twice the MPG, so now I just have the job of helping him fix it up.

Thats all ready on the list antifreeze this weekend and try to keep it inside the engine

For some years with my business partner we imported Landrovers from UK into Malta. Never liked them, but your's is a great little survivor.

Welcome I served 15 years regular & 15 years reserve forces, I hate to think how many miles I drove in a Land Rover.
The 109 was gutless with the petrol engine, particularly with the load we carried. The Defender was much better particularly the turbo version. The locking diffs also made a massive difference off road.
Wasen't the faviourt engine swap the Perkins diesel?

They were designed for everything except driver ( and passenger ) comfort, I never heard of any driver falling asleep in one.... but you could pull anything with it. I once towed a 12'000 Ltr milk tanker more than 4 miles with one,
