The SRS light on the wife's SLK has recently come on. STAR has diagnosed it as a faulty seat pad sensor. These are around £190 + fitting. Can STAR be used to bypass the sensor, i.e. air bag deployed regardless of person sitting in the passenger seat? The other option appears to be an emulator but not keen on this solution. Obviously safety is of paramount importance but quite a lot to spend on an older vehicle.

No star cannot disable the airbag.

An emulator will prevent the airbag operating in different modes of dual stage (which SLK?) Otherwise, it will just mean the airbag fires all the time in the event of an accident, even with no passenger.

It's a 1999 R170. The idea wasn't to disable the the airbag but whether it was somehow possible to bypass the sensor so that the airbag would fire in the event of an accident regardless of whether a person was in the seat.

No star cannot do that either. But an "emulator" will have the same effect.

Many thanks. The vehicle's 20 years old so it really is question of whether it's worth spending £190 + fitting on the new seat pad sensor. I would imagine it will involve a couple of hours labour by the time the seat and cover is removed. Obviously don't want to compromise safety in anyway.
