2002 C220 CDI not revving past 3000rpm

Hi guys I have a C220 CDI 2002 model the problem I'm having is that from 1st gear up until 3rd it revs fine but from 4th up until 6th it does not want to go past 3000rpm and when I stop and drive off again 1st to 3rd suddenly also doesn't rev past 3000rpm, I have cleaned up the MAF and it has started to perform better but it still has that problem, any clue on what could be wrong?

I have noticed the same issue on my 2005 c220. So, following as I don't know what's causing mine.

Sounds like it's in limp mode. You'll need to plug it into a decent MB specific code reader to get the fault codes read.

Where will that sensor be cause it seems like the exhaust was modified by the previous owner?

Usually near the egr valve.

How would I fix it if it was that sensor cause like I said it seems like the previous owner modified the exhaust? Sorry this is my first Mercedes I've ever owned

Don't guess. There are a number of possible causes for your limp mode.
As LK says, get the codes read with a MB compliant code reader as a first step.
If you don't, you'll end up changing sensors and other parts on a hit and miss basis, which is the same as pouring money down a hole.
