I was getting 55mpg actual (plus) out of my old 53 reg c class 220cdi (with the seqetronic gearbox:eek:), and over 40 round town.

And that was an old engine.

Would have expected the 270 to do high 40s at least.......

Also does anyone have a map on their car? Im debating on a map from celtic tuning takes the power to 220bhp but i dont know what thats going to do to the economy!
I can't remember where but there was some discussion on a forum somewhere that was less than flattering about Celtic Tuning and their claims being "optimistic".
Personally I'd use GAD, MSL or AMF.

I never realised how much fuel economy was effected by choice of tyre. I changed from continental 5s to uniroyal and ever since changing my usual commute goes from 54mpg to 50mpg I can't get know where near it

Also just wanted to say post an Merc you have and what MPG you get from daily driving! It would be really interesting to build an archive!

You have to remember that these are quite heavy cars 1.8 tons or somewhere around that and the gearbox i think can be dimwitted around town! I probably only get about mid 30's maybe a little lower in town but on long journeys i can get high 40's and low 50's fairly easily!

Tyre pressures as much (or more) than tyre brands can impact mpg as well

Try some of the hypermiling forums for other tips and tricks.

Some ideas are sensible, others are utterly bonkers.

I was once told going above 60mph in summer is was economical to have the A/C on and below 60mph it was economical to have the window down! Not sure how true this actually is though

My AC is never off. Windows are rarely down.
The droning noise from Windows partly down is very bad (worse than from the passenger seat...)
Likewise AC always on and roof down most of the time...:p

I managed 22mpg on a round trip to LGW; 150 miles.
Happy with that.
Air con on, Conti’s, and no racing with anyone.

There's a lot of wind buffeting on my car if I lower the front windows a little ..... lowering the rear windows a little cures it. I do realise though that my car has the aerodynamics of an Accrington brick :D

It shouldn't make the economy worse (unless it's a bad map...) but it won't improve it either (it might show an improvement on the computer as the map makes it lie even more...). It should improve the driving experience and response though.

Tuning boxes often make the dash incorrect, but mapping on MBs doesn't,as the ecu reports the amount of fuel used to the icm.

Additionally, we can often get 5-8% better economy out of diesels by Increasing start of injection marginally and increasing rail pressure 50-80 bar, whilst also disabling egr.

Did a brim to brim fill at the weekend, I had covered 456 miles at 32.5mpg. Trip gave reading of 456 miles at 30.9mpg. I always suspected the trip would be optimistic so I was surprised with the result.

My old E270 estate used to average 44ish calculated mpg per month (about 4K miles), lots of town driving in that figure too as it was our only car, also working in the city centres quite often did impact it. Anyway that was pre map, egr delete and cat removal, after that it always managed to get .3-5 mpg bettter over the calculated mileage.
The on board computer was always pretty close in mine over a month, always showed .2 lower mpg than my calculated
