Pump in tank

Hi my local garage has told me that my pump in the tank is not working on my
CD I 270 clk 2005 (w208 ). The car has been running fine what does this pump do and how difficult is it to replace ? Looked in Haynes manual and it does not even mention it ? Hope someone can shed some light on this thanks

There is no pump in early models, just venturi system which transfers fuel to other side to another of the saddle tank. Primer pump will be fitted at some point when fuel system is updated (All W211 270CDI engines has it)
