The bolt didn’t look too good in the beginning but was a little unsure what it could be. It looked more like some of the fluted ones I’ve seen on electrical equipment.

Have tried 1/4 and that is a little too big, I have a 5.5mm which is too small.
I was tempted to cut , chop with a chisel the sensor away from the bit, leg that the bolt goes through then get to the bolt but as I can already get square on to the bolt and have room to turn the wrench saw no point in damaging anything.
Have only turned the bolt 90* and it slipped, rounded so suspect it was damaged to begin with. 6mm seems a little small but, thank you for the suggestions.

Can you get a Dremel in there to cut a slot across the top?

Good idea, I think there would be enough room but easier from underneath. I could probably get a blunt ish chisel edge on a side of it from underneath and tap it around. I am just not too keen to damage it and cause bigger problems.

If you can Dremel a slot in it you should be able to get a screwdriver on it. If so bobs your uncle.

That torx looks rounded, I would get the correct size torx socket and tap it on. If it fully rounds, it’ll be a real pita. Unfortunately removing the bolt maybe the easy job as the cps can also be seized in.

I have tried the torx that I have, E7 was the closest but wouldn’t push, tap onto the head, E8 too big and E6 too small. The only socket to get a bit of a grip was a 6mm, tapped on and held square. Still not right.

Beginning to remember why I hung my tools up and began using garages.

Yup, neither fitted, the E8 was too big, the 8mm was also too big. Not sure what is in there but thank you for your continued help.
Used to fix all our cars, Fords, Mini’s and Fiats mainly, but that was twenty years ago !

You need a deep E8, the reccesed nature of the plug makes it difficult, and they can sometimes be stuck in, although getting the bolt out is normally the easy bit.

that looks like an E8 that has been rounded off by using a hex socket instead?

Thank you, I shall get one and try that. I guess that the bolt goes quite a way down inside the brass ring then.

Never keen on giving up on a job until I really have too but am sensible enough to know when to stop.

So glad that the bolt is the easy bit !!!!! Thank you

Id be surprised if that were the case Alex , its not exactly tight ?

I'm thinking it's been changed in the past and over tightened....

Can confirm that it is a E8 changed mine on the E55 just before selling it! as mentioned you need a deep thin walled socket and hopefully should get it out, when you look at the photo you can see the plastic shoulder around the bolt if your trying to fit a wide E8 socket on to it it will not seat on to the head of the bolt! thin walled will do it! cheers Dave

My thoughts too, though no mention of it in the comprehensive paperwork I have and only 70k miles now.
I shall get a deep E8 and try again, thank you all for your help

When you manage to get it out, and you will! a little tip for putting the new one back in put some blue tack in the E8 socket and push the bolt into the blue tack, to stop the bolt dropping out when you lower it back in to the sensor
Cheers

A simple job, that takes forever for one reason or another. Welcome to our world, at least you haven’t got a customer on your back complaining that the cost has gone up. ;)

Indeed, having been a service engineer for the past twenty years I do understand the dilemma of “five minute jobs”, ones that the sales department have costed for an hour and I’m having to go back for another full days work. Luckily I wasn’t the person handing them the final bill .

I will get a new bolt from MB and then be able to see what I am working with.
The deep socket I need, does that fit down inside the round hole, and is that another part holding the cps in ?. The new cps has an oval hole in brass, I guess that that is that way for alignment?.

All clear as mud but will become clear bit by bit, thanks

DaveE320 had a good tip with the blutak , I taped the bolt to the end of the socket with some duct tape to avoid dropping it . I had 2 bolts , one for the heat shield and one for the cps .
