cleaned all the yuk out of the EGR today, tested it with my vacuum pump and it opens but slowly closes as the vacuum pressure drops,, don't know if its designed to do that or it has a slight leak, if its a leak don't know weather it will affect the operation or is the vacuum supplied continuously to it which may hold it open or is the vacuum switched 'on' to open it then stopped expecting it to stay open until the call to 'off' the pressure and release valve ??
don't know if that made sense?
The vacuum runs continuously and varies according to engine speed.

I presume you mean the vacuum to the what appears to be a vacuum solonoid runs continously , but from the solonoid control to the egr the vacuum is then controlled by the solonoid opening or shutting allowing the egr to be either open or shut, if say over 2000rpm the solonoid opens and stays open till revs drop my small leak on egr might have no effect as the continous vacuum supply will overcom the small leak?

If the EGR is closing fully when the engines off and opening when revs are applied I doubt there's much wrong with it ...or the vacuum system.
Causes of smoke are many, most common (imo) are boost leaks, blocked cats, MAF problems, turbo/actuator issues, injector problems.
Although these engines are old they are complex. lack of power, smoke ,long cranking times, poor fuel economy, are just its way of telling you it's not well. Diagnosis is often difficult, do yourself a favour a get an iCarsoft MBII, it will save you a lot of time and money. mine did ;)

Important point above in bold. They do have a tendency to stick slightly open which causes lots of smoke. When doing a delete, it is good practice to tap it fully closed with something solid to ensure it IS fully closed.

refitted no1 injector with an M8 cap head cut down bolt torqued to 18nm(not enough room to drill out old bolt, too deep) started fine ran at high revs and exhaust a lot better but until I get it on rd and give it an Italian tune wont know if all is good, still a lot of yuk in system from cleaning pipes after egr which needs to burn off.... took a close look at injector and no leak BUT no 2 was bubbling !(had put diesel around all injectors to check for leaks.)....no black death,,came out easy ,quick clean of seating ,new seal and bolt, all holding and running ok, finger crossed,
new oil and filters changed tomorrow, hopefully on rd Monday and search for new bumper continues.
Thanks for help advice,

Today did oil and filter change and fuel filter, also drained diff oil then found filler nut was solid tight and 10mm allen socket just turned in bolt messing up hole, have just been out and mixed some epoxy resin and put it on allen socket and hammered it into hole, will see if it holds enough in morning to undo filler , if not will have to buy transfer pump and fill it via drain off hole if I can find a rubber bung to seal around hole and pipe,
Also have bought a second hand bumper in the right colour (359) in very good condition from a parts company for £200 ,just hope it is delivered via courier in the same condition !
another query, noticed when I was revving engine that the pipe into the egr was flexing ,only slightly, is this normal ?

That's kinda ironic!
I am partway through changing all the fluids in my MX5 - next up is the rear diff - and have just read a forum tip that states, 'Always undo the filler plug before removing the drain plug.'
Now I see why.

Or turn the car upside down and use the drain plug

Well done Vincent - I think on the quiet you've got a bargain. The bodywork doesn't look bad at all in your pics (apart from the bumper that you've already sourced). The old bumper was only badly scratched and roughed up I think? If you try a cheap ad on Facebook etc for a few quid, someone worse off than you were might pay you to take it away!

Good luck with your project - I'm sure you'll be over the moon when it's done.

The bumper is held together with tape its in a bad way the tape actually makes it look a lot better, when I take it off I will remove tape and take a pic.
I had an ml270 about 7yrs ago , bought it to pull a removal trailer from Sligo, west Ireland to thanet in kent, did 2 return trips with fully loaded heavy trailer, then took it to Switzerland and back never missed a beat, always regretted selling it , have been looking on and off ever since for a good one for a cheap project so when this came up with hardly any rust I took the plunge,Had 2 rextons with the merc 2.7 engine in(different head, delphi injectors that corrode in solid, absolute nightmare to get out,but I did!) even though the rextons body is better ,the chassis corrodes and they are just poor quality compared to the Ml,
Hopefully will have it on the rd next week and get to bottom of smoking if not cured already other than a good thrash to clear out the system, heres hoping!

Does your car remote key have the metal key in the end of it (or is the ML too old ? )

Well have emailed oris 3 times and they haven't bothered to answer,
put the car on the road today ,unfortunately hammering down with rain, so with the rain and tinted windows hard to see how much smoke, but definitely a massive improvement, unfortunately my right hand wing mirror has a strange brown tint to it which doesn't help! will sort that out tomorrow one way or another,,
Have bought a new thermostat as my temp only goes to about 40 deg so that to be fitted soon, also waiting for transmission fluid /filter /multiplug to be delivered , still on the hunt for front bumper, bought one for £199 the other day on internet, really good cond, only to get a paypal refund 3 days later, wasn't happy.....Will check out cost of respray if I buy different colour bumper to see if viable alternative but probably costly .

my old ML smoked like hell , had all injectors refurbed and that cured it completely , I never managed to get inj5 to seal though , I found it had melted part of the hole where the nozel goes through , it wasn't worth doing the head on and so went to the big scrapyard in the sky

Had problems over a period of time with a rexton I had, when I had bad smoke, I also had nailing and bad leak off from general wear and tear and I changed the control valves and nozzles in the injectrs which cured all leak off and smoking,,,
on this ml the first thing I did was a leak off test which was even and lowish on all inectors so I don't think its an injector problem,
however judging by the massive build up in pipes and egr it wouldn't surprise me if it took a week or so to clear the rubbish from the downstream side of the egr which I couldn't reach but was getting gooey from cleaner sprayed down pipe, will probably give it all another clean while waiting for gearbox oil to drain !
Have noticed side light and dipped light indicator lamps aren't illuminating on dash(headlights do all work,,) is it easy to take off dash panel to check bulbs?
