Very carefully. I did mine earlier this year. Had to remove the injectors to get all of it out. Don't use water like i did though. And make sure the injector holes are sealed off at the bottom. I would imagine you will get even better advice from others though.
Start by chipping, some heat the engine to loosen but I haven't needed to. But mine wasn't excessive.
I've found scraper, screw driver, scouring some with white spirit has done it for me. I blow regularly with an air line, sweep with a paint brush, and let Henry vacuum what he can.
Cold hard stuff you can chip, when going closer to head heat will make tar softer and there many different solvents is reported to use. I used Forte air intake cleaner, effective stuff, but expensive.
