Typing this while I multi task, opening the door to trick or treaters...

Saga starts here...

After owning the grey car for a bit I really got to like it. My wife, however, didn't like the colour...
When a mate wanted to buy it, it seemed like a no brainer to let it go and search out the Mrs preferred blue. Cue months of becoming acquainted with the used Mercedes search portal. Becky's other stipulation was black/black seats. Most of these cars were specified with two tone leather, and blue cars seem to mostly have that option. Blue with black and white is common, but Becks said no to that early on. In my search I have come across some horrors. Blue car with black/red seats is something to behold, but a blue car with black/yellow seats made me question the original owner's sanity as well as their taste!
Then, nirvana! A blue car turns up with black/black, low miles, good spec and the price was downright cheap. Quick thinks me, get them on the blower! Initial enquiry seems positive. My suspicions are up that something must be amiss as its £3k cheaper than most of the age and mileage. "Has it been smoked in?" I ask. Assurances to the negatory, so buoyed on I place a £500 securing deposit and agree to view on Sunday.

Doorbell! Back in a mo...

where was I? Oh yes, roll on Sunday I motor a couple of hours up the road for a bit of tyre kicking. Result! Lovely car. Close to mint in fact. All I can find are two very small stone chips on the front bumper. Interior smells like new. Drives as it should, mileage appears very genuine. We sit down for a chat. The car is so good and so cheap I avoid my usual instinct to haggle a bit and just tell the nice man I'll take it. In truth I can't believe my luck - almost too good to be true! Matey does the paperwork, slips it in front of me and says "sign here". I'm about to scrawl when my eye is drawn to the line above and the price - £38,999. Woah there big boy! That's the wrong price! This was advertised at £36,479! "No sir, the price is £39k. It always has been the price. That is the price of the car". "No" says I, "it was advertised at £36.5k, and that's the price I have driven two hours to pay". "I'm sorry sir it isn't, and I'm sorry you've had a wasted journey"
At this point, quite incensed, I rise from the chair and at a volume high enough to silence the bustling showroom I reply "ARE YOU CALLING ME A LIAR???"
Next thing a big boss comes over and I can feel a request to vacate the premises approaching at a pace.
The big boss suggests we have a look at the internet so I can show them where I saw this...

Doorbell!

Anyway, site loads up, I do the search and there it is... Oh. It appears the price advertised is in fact £38,999. Bugger. I then started to wonder if I was having a senior moment... Surely not... I'm sure... Wasn't it...? "But, but..." I mumble "when I placed the deposit I'm sure we discussed the price..."
Big boss goes off to pull the voice record logs. After twenty minutes he comes back, gits the salesman and drags him off upstairs. They are up there for nearly an hour. Eventually they come back clutching a laptop. They play me myself from earlier in the week. Sure enough I say the price in my convo, although the salesman at no point repeats the price, or crucially as it turns out, correct me that it's wrong...
The big boss then tells me that they have spoken to Mercedes who apparently run the portal, and the car was advertised on the 22nd at the price I saw, and then the error corrected early on the 23rd, when the correct price was inserted. Also crucially, my call and deposit were placed on the 22nd.
No decision can be made there and then, as no one senior enough is on hand. I'm told to leave and someone will ring me Monday.
Monday afternoon, 13.30, I receive a call to tell me I can have the car at my price if I would like it. This sort of thing never normally happens to me, I can tell you!!

Today I had it up in the air for a decent look over. I have to say, I’m pretty happy! Despite receipts for a recent service I decided to drop the MB oil and refill with my preferred lubricant, with a new filter too. Typically the front sump drain had never been out, and the other oft neglected item on these is the oil cooler surround, it hoovers up all kinds of road detritus. It’s quick and easy to remove the front most undertray, release two clips and drop the surround away. There were about two dozen fag butts, a load of leaves and something about the size of a wine gum with a maggot wriggling away on it. Glad I had gloves on! The leaf mould tends to rot away any type of aluminium cooler if left unchecked. Water cooled Porsches suffer this malady too. It beggars belief that they don’t clean this stuff out on a service. When I was an apprentice this attention to detail was whipped into you! Stuck a pair of new wiper blades on the front and it’s quite literally like a brand new car! Very happy with it!!

I know about the Porsche issues, they don’t fit any grill in the middle or side openings in the front bumper either so the detritus flies in and sits at the bottom of the AC and transmission coolers :(

I replaced both my AC rads and then fabricated some 5mm stainless steel mesh which I sprayed black and fitted into the 3 openings. No more leaves and rubbish.

The bizarre thing is that the GT3 has mesh grills as standard, and yet Porsche frown on anyone fitting them to the other models...

Well done Uncle Benz - a great purchase in the end. While you were undoubtedly pleased that they came back and matched the price, I bet you were almost disappointed not to have a fight on your hands! But all’s well... as they say so I hope the boss really enjoys her new car.

Enjoy...

Sooooo, the chrome was doing my nut! The roof bars and window surrounds are satin chrome, the door handles and badges are bright chrome. Arrggh! The mismatch was doing my nut! So, I dropped the car off with Matt@Venom wraps and he dechromed the satin parts for me. Phew! My ocd is relieved!

Booked in with Anthony and Will at GAD on Tuesday...

A bit of before and after, so you can see what I mean. Some people will like the chrome, I am sure, but for me it had to go.
