Hi I’ve changed the engine on my friends e350.

om642

ive got a fault coming up with cam sensor hall b6/1

I’ve check the wires and scoped the sensor and all is looking ok. But the car struggles to start and goes into limp mode.

I’m wounded does anyone know if I would need the ecu of the replacement engine.

would the camshaft signal vary from engine to engine?????

I would argue the if you haven't used the original injectors off the old engine that may be the issue , if you used a bare engine then if could be just fuel pressure needs a bit of a nudge , ive had it plenty often before where ive swapped an engine and had to tow start it to get everything going properly

It starts and runs just cranks a few more times than you would like before it finally starts. And just has this camshaft fault every time you start stored in the trouble codes

you never said which set of injectors or how much of the old unit you used pal ??

mused everything from the old engine to the new. Including the loom

so it could be a timing issue then , assuming the old car started on the button ? id still look at the fuel side of things , pressures etc

So possible timing issue such as the chain stretched/moved?

and check fuel pressures are the next steps.

definitely pal , if the cam sensor is defo ok its the next logical thing that would effect starting unless fuelling isn't quite right but the fact you have swapped the bare engine suggests mechanical to me and hence why I think you shouldnt rule out a timing issue

So shall I go for a full timing check or is there a way of check tensioner length ?

you have a scan tool so I would think someone on here will be able to tell you what values you should see pal ?

What about the crank sensor and teeth? Were they off the original engine and/or were they damaged. If the crank sensor is skipping teeth at cranking speeds it can sometimes show up as a cam sensor failure.

The flywheel was different on the new engine so I’m sure we used the old one.

I get the feeling this is going to be something daft in the end pal

im worried that the camshaft have a different dephaser. I’ve rang merc parts and they saying the camshafts are different from the engine codes I gave them.

make me think it’s possible ecu coding problem.
