I'm going with genuine Mercedes parts I asked for a quote using only genuine parts and the extra tra cost was minimal so I requested only genuine parts.

I assume since my car is a 2010 model the timing chain components have probably been updated since then (seems later om651s don't have this issue much) so the new parts should be superior to the ones it left the factory with.

My concern is them using cheap bits but charging me for genuine, to be fair I do trust the garage but should I ask for the recipient of the parts? Is this reasonable?

Stick your full VIN https://www.ilcats.ru/mercedes&language=en/

goto [Engine] -> [Engine Management] -> [Camshaft & Chain Drive]

You should be able to see all the part numbers for yourself.

Difficult answer - if you supply the parts, how do you know they've fitted the parts you've supplied and also those supplied by them?

When I use to get service from dealer / repair (non Merc), I always requested old part for customer inspection. Fuel filter, oil filter, brake pads.....

I'll probably ask for the old bits back anyway as Im always building stuff in my garage and a chain and sprokects might come in handy for something.

Dunno if I should ask the garage to include their receipts for the merc parts in my invoice or is this cheeky/accusatory.

I'd ask and say you "want to be able to show receipts for genuine parts when you come to sell the car later"

Brake discs : ATE coated

Belts/pumps: Gates

I have to concur on Gates aux v belts being way better made than either Continental or the terrible Dayco rubbish. QH quinton hazel (UK made) aux belts are pretty decent as well.

One of the 4%. I wouldn't even rate them poor
I replaced discs and pads twice for severe vibration when braking from 70mph. In the end replaced with Brembo and no further issues. Car was a Mazda Xedos 6 so hardly heavy or powerful.
Also had issues on my mountain bike with pads breaking up. Never had that issue with any other pads.

So you preferred Brembo, fair enough they have been stopping things well for a long time.

My old car does some towing duties and it performs so much better with the EBC set up, I have so much more confidence in it.

There are so many first rate manufacturers looking to provide consistent friction it stands to reason there will be some alternatives.

There is also a lot of reasonable to poor ones its a crowded market.

I can cope with less than stellar bite as I can drive around that if I have to. It's a much bigger problem when the brakes try to wrench the steering wheel out of your hands when slowing from motorway speeds (EBC experience).

that doesn't sound good at all LK , my VXR has the same front brakes as the EVO 5-10 range and oddly no one with an EVO ever complains about braking o_O on the VXR the steering wheel vibrates violently until they cool down again , its very unnerving

That was exactly what happened with EBCs. Switched to Brembo and no issues.

the Brembos just cant hack it in my car though LK , even worse than the EBC and wear out pretty quick too , im going with DS2500 next time although it will need discs this time around which creates even more issues , I may have to import them from Australia

When I had the EBCs it was discs and pads. Replaced with Brembo discs and Ferodo pads and it cured it.

Smart + others :)
here we go again the OEM vs MB Genuine parts thread.
:D just off to get more popcorn. As a garage, we cannot take the hit and miss of if it’s a good aftermarket part or not, or doing the job twice or customers complaining about brake squeal or judder.
We just had an instance of a well known parts supplier for a certain engine who supplied timing chains that were made from chocolate. Now this is normally a cost effective repair on an older car but these failed dramatically, with all the issues associated with a chain failure. Obviously we repaired the vehicles at our cost but there was no recompense from said supplier.
