"W208 CLK430 Coupe"...

The chap I bought the car from did tell me that the Windows needed to be reset a he had fitted a new Battery, which is quite obviously apparent - a huge Bosch item!

Anyway, today I thought I would give it a go.

*** The Windows worked fine before this other than the "One-Hit Down", you had to hold the Button***

But I think I did it wrong. This is what I did.

1) Ignition on - Engine running.
2) Lowered Driver's Window holding the Button fully down past click and held for 10 seconds.
3) Went to raise said Window but nothing doing! Heard like a "click" from within the Door but no movement.....
4) Confused!!!!???
5) Lowered the Passenger Window slightly, about 6 inches, tried to raise it back up - nothing doing!

The only way I could raise the Windows was by doing the Global Close facility. (Luckily)!

What have I done???

I will say that after leaving the car for a while at the shops the Windows work just as long as I do not press the Button past the "Click".

Any help would be appreciated please.

Thanks.

Not sure what year it is as don’t think the one push opening came in on the very early ones. Our 98 SL only has down ( a face lift upgrade I am told ? ) and hold all the way up.
I would disconnect the battery for five mins and begin again.

Thanks Brian.

Mine is a '99 but strangely it has later model features, like drop-down windows as well as One-Hit Lower on both. It also has Grill behind the Grill and Repeaters in the Indicators.
Also strangely it has a 3rd Seat Belt in the Rear and like a Seat Cushion that fits into the Centre Rear Cubby which can be removed leaving it look like a normal CLK.

Reading other info after I had tried to do mine is that when you lower the Windows you do not press past the "click, you only press past the click when the Window was down and then hold for a few seconds.
I will try this tomorrow if it's not bludy raining! I really hate this WEATHER!!!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

All I am looking for is some confirmation is all as I believe the sequence is common across a few models.

A grill behind grill for explanation. I had one on my old CLK that I actually bought for it.

Hopefully it will all get back to working correctly.

Weather, yup I’ve had enough of it too. Can’t get owt done to the cars, can’t finish my shed and as for the dogs
, just mud carriers atm.

I changed the battery and reset the windows numerous times on our W208 but can’t remember if I lowered them, then held or held all the way up and down. Ours was on a Y, but thought it was a 2001 ??

No third seat or extra rad though but nice cars.

When I have reset the windows in a 2004 W211, Ignition to Pos 2 (don't start the car) lower the window and when fully open, hold switch on for > 5 secs. Then raise window to fully closed and again hold switch for > 5 secs. Always worked for me.

Hi guys, I hear what you are saying but confirm you lower the windows manually, ie just on the first movement without pressing it past the click, then when open you press past the click and hold. Then the same procedure to close the window?

** Also, do you start with the Window full down or fully up?

Changed the battery and WTF?!! Horribly familiar, Halfords did my battery Saturday, put the car into limp mode, locked the gear shift - all by connecting a 12v battery to the OBD port "to keep the ECU's happy while the battery is disconnected"!! Instead they killed the pin 16 power to the OBD port and the secondary power feed to the TCM, took my indie 2 hours to figure and fix it, especially as the OBD port was dead so he had to go back to basics to get that live (fuse 16 I believe) then get the secondary power to the TCM sorted. Halfords tomorrow get a bill for £174 - which thankfully the manager on Saturday said they will pay!

Moral - to change a battery, there is an emergency +ve under a red plastic tag under the bonnet, connect a spare battery to this and the top of the suspension, be very careful with the main battery leads when changing the main battery as they are still live, especially make sure the +ve battery lead gets nowhere near the bodywork (cue sparks and swearing!!).

Whatever you do do NOT connect a spare battery to the OBD port!!

Furteher response form my Indie :

Good to hear, and thanks, we have access to main dealer wiring diagrams and fuse board layouts, the issue was the power feeds hadn't completely blown so was showing no voltage at DLC but some voltage else where, so we had to back check the wiring diagram for the second missing feed which had melted slightly but not blown, so caused a correct voltage until load dropped, weird really. Seems like the equipment they use potentially spikes the 12v circuits which have no direct feed back to battery.

It's better to just let the voltage die down after battery removal, and boot up on a new battery.

Think I need this translated into English!

re the windows, I'd have thought if you held in the down position trying to reset (back to front) it might have tripped on a thermal cut out (hence they stopped working)

the feature you reset is the anti trap for closing... and on any car that needs it you go down, then close and hold it when its reached the fully up position till the clunk (about 2 seconds...)

my 2003 170 only has auto down function windows and I always thought any window reset was usually carried out with ignition on and not engine running ?

Merc were a bit behind the times then. My 1990 Senator had auto up & down on all windows with anti-trap :)

I wouldn't think there's any difference.

The grille behind the grille is fitted when you have electric fans in front of the radiator...other than that it is not fitted.

Ah, I wondered that - I thought it was purely for aesthetic reasons because it does look better!

But all this does not answer my final question in Post #6.....

"do you start with the Window fully down or fully up?"

I'm presuming fully down as it's not so bad if they don't go down compared with up....??

Thanks.... :)

The reason I ask is when I originally did it I started with the window up and followed the procedure, (other than I pressed the button all the way down to lower the window) then held the button for 10 seconds and released. I then went to raise the window and it would move at all.
My thinking is that the window was under the impression that it was already all the way down because although it didn't move it made the sound like when you try to lower the window when it is already down, like a "donk"...

After leaving the car for a few minutes locked the windows will go up and down just as long as I don't try to use the "one-hit", ie press the button fully.

So I'm thinking of putting the window all the way down and then do the procedure by putting the window up, (but not pressing the button all the way), then pressing the button past the click and holding for XY seconds and seeing if this works....... If it doesn't then &*% knows!!!

But at least if they won't go down after that then no big deal - for now.

Windows sorted - I think I did it wrong the first time....

Thanks everyone, all help and advice greatly appreciated!

I know quite a bit about Mercs - should do this now being my 12th...!! But when you come across an issue you've never had before you might as well be a novice! Or a numpty - or both!

Thanks again....

NB. Now onto the next...... Not as simple I fear.

Thankfully all the LCD's work on this one! A very rare occurrence!

And the CD Multichanger works aswell....

Oh, I forgot I kept the Aux Grill off my CLK's, (I did buy it for the first one). Well, I did buy it separately - and they are rare!
