The lock/unlock buttons on the remote fob for my ML270 (2003) have suddenly failed after 16 years....replaced the batteries and still no joy. Are these thing repairable or is it "over the left shoulder" and buy a new one?

Not sure about Oz but in the UK there are companies that can repair them.

If I remember there was a common failing of the (I think) transponder coming adrift from the pcb, Television used to repair them.

Thanks John but seems my 2003 ML 163 is not on the list. 164 onwards only. Seems rather exxy too but haven't priced a new one so that might give me a shock. I have a spare unused key so will continue with that. Problem with damaged key, is it will run the car using the metal key but I can't lock/unlock it. Metal key only locks drivers door. I can use internal central locking, but then everyting unlocks when the d/s door is opened and I can't relock the other doors. Silly arrangement. Haven't tried opening door before pressing central locking key - maybe it will work that way.

Ian.

Have you tried re syncing it? It may not be the key too, it might be the one of the activity modules.

The clue for this is the key works with IR when pointed at the IR receiver but won't work with RF.
At the pointy end of the electronic key there's s small cool which can come adrift from the key PCB. Resolder it and Bob's your mother's brother.

How does one go about resynching it as you suggested?

Ian.

Remove the key, and press the LOCK button, and hold it pressed while simultaneously pressing the UNLOCK button 5 times. 3. Now release the buttons, and press either the LOCK or UNLOCK button once. That should re-synchronise the key I think. :)

But first, insert key into ignition and turn to position 2 (ignition on) then turn off and remove key then follow the above...

Thanks for that guys. I'll give that a try tomorrow morning and let you know result.
Haven't had any joy with anyone offering to repair it so, if it doesn't work, may have to rely on the unused "new" spare key, which I am now using, to see out the life of the car.

This worked for me on my spare key, electrics are not my thing but it seems that when the batteries in the key have been flat for a while the key "forgets" what its supposed to do even when it has new batteries, sky remotes have the same problem.

Thanks STAR and Taffy. The procedure worked a treat. Seems that when battery goes flat, that procedure has to be done. Things you learn.....my Nissan fob accepts new batteries without a murmur so assuned Merc would be the same.
If I lived in England, I'd buy you a beer.....saved me a lump of money and inconvenience.
