I realise thathey are not a charity but you said a protected NCB was a waste of meny, I was pointing out that it is still a discount even though on a larger premium. They’re not a charity... the amount you’ll have to pay will be within a £ or 2 either way. They just made the difference off of you last year when you protected it.
What I'm saying is that you pay more to have a protected NCB so whilst the premium might be slightly less post claim by having a protected NCB the overall amount you'll pay will be the same as if you never had it.I realise thathey are not a charity but you said a protected NCB was a waste of meny, I was pointing out that it is still a discount even though on a larger premium.

If you shop around because you're unhappy that the premium has risen so much then one of the first questions you'll get is have you had a claim. You say yes, you say you've protected NCB they say that's great and you still get a premium hike.
They are in the business of making money and taking as much from you as they feel they can legally get away with, nothing more.
Haven’t made a claim , previously having 5 cars and 3 bikes, meant I am cautious. Any claim would affect all 8 policies very negatively, but you can’t use the NCB from another one when you get another vehicle you have to start from fresh each time...You're an old timer like me or haven't made claim recently. In the 'old days', if you had an accident you would lose that year's NCD.
Fast forward, if you don't protect your NCD and are unfortunate to be involved in accident you will lose your NCD eg 20 years to 3 years! They don't care about your driving record and will arbitrary start from 5 or 6 years as this is the 'industry standard' and make the reduction from there.
Most Insurers only take into consideration between 6 years to 9 years of NCD. It is in your interest that you chase up and correct this error after time of each renewal to keep your driving record up to date.
Another racket is that you have to have policy within 2 years or else you will lose all your NCD. In the old days the certificates were like 'bearer bonds' with no time limit and Comprehensive mean't what it was. Now, without legal cover you won't get much far especially persuing non-fault incidents.
In summary, everything needs to be 'added-on' to be fully covered.

The 2 years can be a pain, I’ve just started a policy so the one I had on hold didn’t lose the 17 years NCB.
