Just a quicky. My e320 cdi 2007 appears to hate the cold and early morning starts. The change up is very slow and change down is quite noticable and jerky. It's fine after a short time and a warm up. Is this normal?

When was the last gearbox oil change and filter service , and what mileage has the car got ?

ATF not sure. Filter service /change within the last month. Mileage 99000!

Recommended Gearbox ATF and filter is every 40k miles . An MB Indy may charge £250 for the job . Without the car being connected to MB Star diagnostics this might be the cheapest option especially if the last change is well in excess of 40k miles

Cheers mate. I did mention the ATF change to an Indy I use. They said their shouldn't be a need to change it which I thought was a little strange. I'll check through previous paperwork to see if it's been done.

That’s “interesting” advice you’ve been given...

I asked them about the ATF change as a mate of mine who loves Mercedes said it would transform the feel of the gearbox when changed.

True - it would make a significant difference.
And of course, as everyone knows, MB autoboxes are all lumpy when cold, and get smoother as they warm up - especially in the next few months.

And I thought at first that this thread was talking about custard!

depends on how much you like walking !! benz dont mind if you dont change it ,you will just be visiting them sooner... dumping oils and filters at regular intervals is the cheapest maintenance you will ever do ,especially if you do it yrself, complicated a little by benz ridiculous procedure for doing it, or much else on their cars.. . if yr keeping the brand? google it and maybe you can learn to do it yrself.. then you can rule this out .

Good afternoon. What should I be paying an indy for an ATF change with filters and seals included. Thanks in advance. James

had my w163 done about 2 years ago, at 40,000.
For oil, gasket, filter and new plug was about £200 including labour.
The gearbox oil should be drained and refreshed every 40,000 miles, as the "sealed for life" bit did not do the gearbox any favours.

About £200-250 I would guess . Where do you live , maybe someone can recommend an MB expert nearby

I would get it changed as the learned chaps above say. Did mine myself, made a huge difference to feel and quality of change. Felt like a new car, still does. Piece of mind I say, a gearbox failure is frighteningly expensive. As umblecumbuz says though, they are all a bit choppy from a cold start, but within a few hundred yards are very smooth. I've been in a friends new E class with a 9g box and even that is lumpy from cold (I was listening for the tell tale 'lump' from the first couple of change ups), I didn't him though as he would have panicked!!
