Hi guys
So I have bought an e250 CDI estate with 107k miles Full service history and very well looked after . I bought it because I read the economy was 750miles to a tank

So far it's given me 250miles to half a tank withe computer showing 51mpg over 254 miles at average speed of 55mph.i have been doing 60-70mph on motorway .

I find this very heavy compared to my 2011 520d estate which gave me 350 to top half of the tank on motorway at same speed

Is this normal ?
If not what can be causing this to be so heavy on fuel

Hi and welcome to the forum. I’m not familiar with that car and engine combination but 51mpg from quite a big car at or near Motorway speeds sounds pretty good to me.

Sounds very normal, the 2 litre BMW derv engine circa 2010 takes some beating for economy it was probably the best around at the time. Move the clock on to where we are today with EU6 regulations on emissions including DPF and ADBLUE and any increase in power per litre has been nullified, in fact you may struggle to better it, if you are seeing a genuine 50mpg that’s good

From recollection that particular BMW engine returned a genuine 60mpg on decent runs

Welcome I am guessing your tank size is 60Ltr? If you really wanted tank range you should have gone for the E350CDI, its got an 80Ltr tank. I get 900 miles on a tank on trips across Europe in the summer.
50 MPG in your car is not bad.

I used to get 925 miles with my E220d... with a 60 ltr tank :D:p:cool:

I wanted to push for the 1,000 but didn’t have the opportunity :(

Hi guys
Thanks for the replies
Computer states 51mpg but it can't be true because it's taken almost 1/2 tank and only done 230 miles which equates to 34mpg

My tank is 59litres according to the book

Yep it's om651 2.2 CDI twin turbo
I have the same engine but a E coupe. Basically a c class on steroids. I can get up to 57mpg on motoway trips. I think it's unrealistic tho. My tank size is 66 litres and apparently does 769 miles per tank but yet to try it.

2016 with the OM654 engine and 9G box. Very, very possible, I was commuting from West Yorkshire to Hereford every week and then 8 miles per day during the week commute.

Cruise set at 68 on the motorway - 58 or 60 mph average for the trip. Used to see 83mpg showing for the 180 mile trip down on a Monday morning at 04:15

wow man ! thats truly amazing
i think the om651 in not efficient unless doing 60-65mph on a flat
most my computer shows is 53mpg
im also from huddersfield-i travel to leeds and bradford often which are quite hilly motorways so does affect MPG massively
when driving down to london i think it will be better

today over 17miles to leeds its gave me 47.1 , then when parking up its reduced to 46.7 lol minor movements make the mpg drop quick but takes a while to increase!

Huddersfield to Leeds and Bradford o_O I'm lucky to see 27mpg and 25 mph in my SLK. Stop start (if you're lucky) just "stop" if you're not... M62 and M606 are traffic nightmares as is the M621 into Leeds. Surprised you get as much as you do!

If you have a slk I'm guessing it a petrol ..so 27mpg ain't bad

But am used to getting 150-200 miles to top quarter of tank ..300 -350 to top half. In my 1.9 and f11 520d touring

Since I've got this e250 estate, top quarter gives me 110 miles :( and top half of tank 260 mixed
Hence the stress!
My brother has same car and also gets similar economy-max 350-400 to tank most local driving
So we are both thinking ...book figures state 44mpg local and 62 motorway but we get half that !

I've noticed the facelifts ones seem to be better on fuel when asking people but not sure why as they're the same engine and gearbox

Never believe book figures, these are based on rolligng roads no stress etc etc.

Dont see why you are getting so stressed. Run the tank to near empty, refill with a premium fuel and a shot of redex.

See how you get on.

Personally dont see the fuss what you are experiencing, book values v real life, you fell for the book values and take it as gospel....

only reason im moaning is because im comparing it to my previous 520d touring and a6 avant -they seemed to be alot more efficient

yes i will try running it to empty first -then il brim it with shell vpower diesel + add injector cleaner

ive just looked at when i bought the car - over 28,300 miles it did 42.8mpg
the previous owner didnt reset trip meter, he was an old man that did that 28k in 3 yrs
