Comfort?
Look down by the gear selector you'll have s switch marked C/S. Press it (with engine on) and see if the C goes out.

As per above. Shifts up the gearbox earlier than “S”

It would probably change from C to S...mine does.

Mine is marked C-S-M (R171 SLK280) - I have flappy paddles for Manual gearchange! Haven't tried it yet, car has spent more time in the workshop (long stories!) than with me since I bought it a month ago!

All S seems to do on my C220 S204 is hold the change-up to 3.5k instead of 3k when you get enthusiastic with the loud pedal - but I still use it, especially on motorway slip roads joining! It may also make kisckdown a bit quicker to work compared to C mode, but not sure on that as I seldom use it.

You’ll probably find it makes more of a difference in your SLK280 :D

Makes a very nice noise and quite rapid progress

If I ever get the damned thing back, it's spent more time with the mechanics than me since I bought it a month ago, and the rear NS wheel coming off 10 days ago was the latest - garage released the car to me without torquing up the wheel nuts on that wheel! OK, they're putting the damage right, but I'm guessing they're having a problem getting the replacement cross brace from Germany (the 4 rear NS control arms, brake dust shield, rear discs and replacement wheel nuts/lockers should not have been a problem). Supposed to get it back tomorrow.

Hi I now have the car and the button actually say C,S and M, but the manual only shows a button with C and S. What is M?

Manual.
It's all in the er... manual :)

Not it isn't. It is supposed to be on P119, but it doe not show this type. Now found it on P122. Why would you want manual gears? Snow maybe. Thank you

I don't know the car ... but are we confusing 2 different things?
My R Class had a button that changed the C/S on the dash that was allegedly to do with the gearbox shift patterns. But it also had another switch that had C/M/S on it that changed the Airmatic suspension settings from Comfort to Medium to Sport

Sounds like you have flappy paddles behind the steering wheel like on mine, left one to change down and right one to change up, so you can pretend you're LH!
