Hi I am looking at buying a 2006 SLK that I like. It is Red which is not a commonly available colour. I do not want a Silver or Black unless I have to. Anyway, the parktronic doesn't work. It all lights up, but nothing. Worst case scenario is this going to be very expensive? I have an 'I Carsoft', so could plug it in when I get it. It isn't local, so cannot pop over to try things. Yes difficult to answer without plugging in. Just thought that there may be a common fault on these that MAY be the problem. The price I have been offered has been dropped because of this. Well any views would be great.

Probably a sensor or two faulty. If it’s more than that you could just replace the system with an aftermarket one.

If it’s red then check the lacquer isn’t peeling, or if it’s been resprayed the it’s a good job

Thank you. I will have to take a close look at the body work as i have seen that this can be a prblem on this colour.

lights up but doesn't work? that doesn't sound right. If the lights respond it is working.
Are you new to Mercedes brand, their take on parking sensors is rather special ?

One bit is class leading (coming on at the front automatically)
Another part is back of the class (they don't work - they come on so late and so quietly there's no point in them being fitted)

Hi, no this is my 5th Mercedes and 2nd SLK. I have just seen on Youtube that they do n ot make a sound until you are very close, so my be working. At the worst I can fit a numberplate camera. I have worked on all the Mercedes that I have and will be fixing this if poss. Not a big prolem really. I will have to plug it in and see.

Can you paint them to colour match or will this stop them working?

If its not working you get 4 red blocks and a constant beep for a short while. Then the system switches off. The scan will show duff sensors.

There are 2 red lights on all the time. Nothing changes, no sound.

Then its turned itself off to avoid futher damage. Probs be a sensor or 2 thats shorting out due to water ingress at the rear where the rubber seal is.

should be two amber lights... then you drive closer until the paint is coming off the bumper when suddenly all lights go red, then 1/2 a year later it eventually beeps about as loud as a 1972 casio watch alarm running on its original battery

have u ever owned a BMW? they have

1) decent parking sensor range,
2) great visual representation
3) one screen located in a pretty sensible position
4) loud beeps that are audible whenever an object is in range
5) each corner gets it own tone

on my Merc they
1) react 1800mm later than a BMW
2) have the most useless and incompetent visual representation of what happening possible,
3) the TWO displays are situated in different locations, neither are in the line of sight of the driver, with the front obscured by the steering wheel spokes
4) they are 1/2 as loud as you need and only beep within 500mm of hitting something, so even when driving slowly its late to react to
5) have the same tone everywhere, so you have no idea what's close to what as you bob about the cabin like a demented chicken trying to look at 5 locations at once

I did have a BM, didn’t like it or the parking sensors. Nothing wrong with it just as bland as magnolia paint and about as engaging.

I've not owned a BMW but have seen their display. Surely you should be looking in the direction of travel rather than the screen at the front
3) the TWO displays are situated in different locations ... yes! 1 at the front for going forward & 1 at the back for going backwards ;) you can see the front leds directly and the rear leds either over your shoulder or through your rear view mirror.
5) have the same tone everywhere, .... they do, but you have more or less leds (orange or red) depending on what's closest to you.
I've never measured how close I am or not to the car I've parked up to ...... I've looked & thought that I could've got closer if I'd wanted, but it was plenty good enough.

I’d be more worried regarding the paint issues with that colour.

almost not worth following up as I'm so far in front and you know it, but for others just in case...

where is the reversing camera screen ? all three elements front and rear sensors plus the camera in ONE location, NOT 3 is a far better idea to ASSIST the driver. And as the tones are unique per corner and audible you don't need to look anywhere other than outside as you can hear what's happening nice and early (unlike a merc)

and the next point..... so front never swings about and could hit things going backwards?

I'd contest that but still ....

I do have a camera now, but the sensors are the same set-up as the R Class was that had no camera.

While we are talking cameras. Can an after market reversing camera be wired through the sat nav screen?

yes.... however u need a video input to the comand screen (early NTG1 in a 211 doesn't have this) and to use an NTSC camera
