There could be so many causes however first thing you need to do is get a full STAR diag done, get codes read, get codes reset and then test and see if it runs normally. On these cars, several of the ECUs in the car have a max error tolerance before they put the car into varying limp modes to protect against damage. It could be something as simple as a sensor not reporting back the expected range over the full life of the car since last code reset, or something more serious.

Best not to guess until you have no other options. Take it to an Indie Merc specialist that’s has a proper Star diag and get a full work-up. Will possibly cost you £45-75 but ultimately should be worth it.

I would not like to speculate on the possible cause at this point. I would only ask, have you had any other issues recently (prior to this issue) that could indicate the fault? I.e. Loss of power, excessive smoke, rough running, difficulty starting, laboured acceleration, unfamiliar noises etc...

As said above. Do you have any dash warning lights on? Any error messages showing?
Limp mode is a safety feature. The electronics see a fault (sometimes a momentary hiccup) and shut down full power so that you do not inadvertently damage the engine or gearbox.

It's possible that clearing the fault codes will put matters right - but you need to get the fault codes read before you do anything else. There are two ways to do this. Either, as said, go to a Merc specialist (£60-£100 for the scan, plus cost of fixing the fault), or buy yourself a Merc dedicated scanner (£80 - £130) and read the codes yourself. Many on here go the second route, for obvious reasons.

Mine has recently reported an EGR left sensor faulty and thus gone into limp mode. Well, that's what the iCarsoft reported.

Sorry for the delays on replying been super busy at work and limited internet use ... to date I've got the auto gearbox service ... shocking to see it was it probably it 1st service ... then done the engine service and that was even worse .. all filters were black as black can be even found a pink duster in the air box ... found the egr valve rubber pipe has been cut and a bolted insert in the bore of said cut pipe ... also no hot air threw the heater ... still in limp mode so booking her in for a star diag ..

Only the 1 battery.
To be safe better not to jump from a running donor,
boost pack start,
or put a freshly charged battery in w/o some load to pull down the voltage.

Early cars can be prone to SAM problems due to spike voltage.

It sounds like you mo mo hasn't been some one's pride and joy.

When I did my battery swap on my 2002 w203 this is the method I used, jump pack worked a charm, no SAM problems and also meant no settings were reset or lost in the process although it was a little fiddly.

There is only 1 battery, generally located under the cabin air filter on the rear RHS under the bonnet.

I had a similar problem and I changed the EGR and MAF and it turned out it was the turbo in the end with a great loss of power.
Has you model got the turbo?

Remind me what MAF stands for agin and what it looks like please?

I didn’t want to make any suggestions until you had the detail back from STAR diag but, as everyone else has mentioned it, the first thing I replaced on my C270cdi was the MAF as the car would go into limp mode, turbo would not kick, can’t remember if Revs were restricted. Paid for OEM MAF at Mercedes parts shop, £79 I think, sorted my problem, that was 4 years ago.
