The coupe and cabriolet was based on the C Class chassis so had the shifter on the tunnel rather than on the tree which the saloon and estate had

so coupe had the stick and saloon the knob , basically.

I had a 2010 with stalk rather than traditional. My thinking was either due to being 6 pot or avant garde which made it lose the traditional gear stick. Most 2010 I saw were the traditional shifter.

As above the E coupe and cabriolet were based on the C class and not the E, the C didn’t loose its tunnel shift until the 205

2010 would have been the cross over year between 7G and 7G+ I think, although still unsure why it would be different on saloons or estates, as before those coupes and cabriolets I can understand

I may be wrong but at the inception of the 212 range of cars there was an option to have the 7spd box as an upgrade so the only way to really tell which box is fitted 7spd or 5 spd is to look at the selector position, steering column for 7 spd and trans tunnel for 5 spd

Drive gear lever
Knob selector
Tunnel shifter
Tree shifter
Stick Selector

Traditional shifter

I had no idea there were so many different gear selectors in MB cars? :geek:
