Smaller engines still had the 5G box in the W212, the 7G was an option
Yep, I was just referring to the bigger engine cars, remember the old adage, always have more cylinders than doors

But the 7G box was available in the 211 facelift

The debate appears to be about how you determine which box is fitted to a 212 Matt, a quick visual reference is the position of the gear shifter other than looking at the V5

What’s getting me is , if you bring up a list of E class for sale roughly 2009-20012. I can near enough find same cars whether 200 till 350s all with different type of shifts , so was there ever an option around this time when buying as to what type of shift controller you wanted.
It’s getting more confusing the more I search.

The position of the shifter denotes which gearbox type is fitted all cars with 5spd g/b have the shifter on the tunnel - all 7spd cars have a steering column change

I thought he was only looking at the V6 hence, if that’s the case then they were all 7 speed boxes from the facelift 211 onwards, the 212 inception got a cross over of 7G and 7G+
If however the OP is just looking at any engined E, then my bad and yes your completely correct, I’d just read it in a different way

I was looking at the type of shifter whether it was a stick on centre console or ?

Which engine size are you looking at and what vehicle type are you comparing? I think we’re all getting a bit confused or maybe it’s just me

April 2010 Mercedes E350 cdi BlueEfficiency Sport Auto coupe. 140k miles covered with service history.
this has the stick on centre console. Yet it’s a coupe.

A Facelift in late 2012 / 2013 saw the auto stick in the C207 coupe go and become a column shift
It also brought in the natty little clock on the center dash (I have pre facelift 2012)

The same may have happened at the same time or different time on E class saloons and estates as its an E class interior
Its nowt specifically to do with the gear box as I have a 7G+ with a tunnel 'stick' (the + was required for stop start)

There was also some frontal external facelifts which were usually done at the same time, but being Mercedes, not always.....

Okay so let’s break this down a little, the coupes it cabriolets always have the shifter on the center tunnel no matter the engine size up until the facelift 212. The saloons and estates had the shifter on the tunnel if it was a 4pot engine (normally though you could upgrade to a 7 speed that would then be a column shift), the 6 and 8 pot engines (excluding the AMG’s) got the 7G box as standard and as before the shift was on the column always.
Hope this clears it up for you

Cleared it up for me, thanks. I was dead curious.

Having been peering in the windows at many 212s from 2010, I began to figure that it was the 350s that had the column shifter.

Thanks :)

Thank you , having looked through what I had saw. This seems about right.
Was very confused the more I looked .
