I'd never hit a disc or anything else I wanted to use again with a proper hammer o_O .... I do have a few soft faced (plastic or leather) mallets I could though.
I'm assuming that the OP is replacing the discs otherwise she wouldn't want to remove them. The chances are the original discs are shot already.

I've never wore out a pair of rear discs ;) even with 180k on the clock :)
Having said that I've never wore out a set of parking brake shoes either

I’ve replaced a few rear discs because of rust build up from lack of use

I'd drive around the block a few times & see how they look ;)
Done that, but when it builds up over time it affects the pads and they don’t clear it.

I know! I've had that on just the inside of a pair of front discs ;)
I’ve also sat and drilled out the rust from the holes in discs before. That’s a time consuming job...

I had to replace the retainer springs on my 08 w219 . They rusted away and the shoes wernt seated correctly. The hb shoe springs looked a nightmare to work on.

It's not uncommon for the back plate to rust through where the retaining springs sit

A few days ago I turned the rear hubs in to lathes.
Jack up, onto axle stands.
Wheel on one side and chocked to stop rotation.
Tother side reversed the drum / disc and in gear so rotating at tickover I used a 4" grinder to remove lips on the disc and the lip in the drum.
Then simialr setup for t'other side.

Tbh lass (op) I didn't realise you were a mefale, and it doesn't make a difference to my attitude.
There's no need to treat you as lesser capable, but as the chaps realise you are a lass you will get more attention then a guy would. It's still a form of sexism.

I had the issue of the hold down bolts not coming out last year, so I drilled 'em and replaced with stainless.
I hadn't considered the faster option of shearing 'em. Good tip, thanks.

I will admit to sexism when it comes to spannering on cars.
I have a lot of time and huge respect for any female who's prepared to get stuck in and do things on her own, largely because most won't or don't want to and will pass the job over to a significant other or garage. I'm happy to give the fairer sex more assistance than I might a male as it's rare a female will have had the same level of engagement with the oily bits of a car.

My ex wife was wooed on a heady mix of Castrol R, No1 racing fuel and toluene. She went to night school and learnt how to strip and rebuild a car engine and get it running in the car again. Part of the reason she is an ex wife is because she ceased having an interest in doing what I liked doing and started curtailing my interests. The current MrsLK works in the motor industry (as a purchasing specialist for classic vehicles) and has the same interest in cars I do, though she's less prepared to cover herself in oil.

Fair crack to you OP. Keep at it.

If i was going to the bother of replacing shoes . Id change the disc/drum whilst i was on. Also fit new springs and retainers. Also fit new brake pads. Purely because it can be a pig of a job and costs are not too high. What you save on labour pays for the parts.
Yes, rear discs are really cheap , might as well change them
