Hi Folks.

Just getting the wifes 2004 c class 2.2 sport estate ready for mot. Spannerman says the rear brake pipes are not great, but has cleaned and sprayed them for the present. If anyone has replaced these can you let me know the approx time involved as I believe the tank has to be dropped to do this.

Common problem on the W204, they corrode, IIRC you also have to drop the rear axle, I wouldn't expect much change out of £700

I did see a YouTube vid a few months ago , with a c class owner who managed a rear brake pipe replacement by only loosening the rear subframe bolts to increase access by a small amount

A friend of mine who is a mechanic says it is easier to make them rather than buy them done from MB, he always has a role of brake pipe ready

OUCH! £700 seems a lot considering the Febi Bilstein parts are less than £20. I will speak to the indy who is a Merc technician as he may have some way of doing this unknown to us. He only mentioned having to drop the tank to do it. I will keep you all posted. Please mention me in your prayers!:(

I replaced the rear cross-over brake pipes on my 204, but did not follow the original route.
Think out of the box.
There is absolutely no need to either drop the tank or the rear axle, unless you slavishly want to follow the original route - but why would you, when you can run the new pipe along any route you choose?
The pipes were run to make original assembly easy for Mercedes - not to make later replacement easy for the owner.
Tell your mechanic to run it the simplest safe way - it then becomes an easy and cost-effective job.

For all the talk of a 204, I believe a 2004 C class (see post #1) would be an S203 so may be slightly different to an S204!

Yep, you're right. It's bound to be a 203 if it's 2004 year. My mistake - confused with all the Mercs Oldjohnny has acquired!
I never changed brake pipes on any of my 203's, but the same reasoning above still applies.
