Hi guys. I’m new to here and only owned my CLK for a few weeks.

I tried to put the top down today (to show the kids) and the dash is saying close boot separator and I can’t see what it means. Can anyone help please?

Hello and welcome,

In the boot there is a hard plastic cover with a handle in the middle that you need to pull towards you and lock it into the lower position. When it is in the lower position it closes a micro-switch in the left hand clip that tells the car the boot separator is in the lower position so there is space for the roof to fold into

Welcome Craig. I can't believe you've owned it for weeks without wanting to see it with the top down. You're going to love it. By now you know how good a resource this forum is too.

Thank you that’s great. Just done that and works fine now. Thanks much appreciated

Haha I know but the day I bought it, it was snowing and had to move snow off the car to even view it ... Since then it’s been pizzing it down an had a 10 min break in the rain so I could show the girls but didn’t work ..
Yes this forum will be my port of call and grateful that there’s people out there who are willing to give up there time to help. I hope I don’t have to ask for advice on problems so hopefully you don’t hear from me again but at least I know your there ...

Much gratitude

Thanks Craig

Have you found yourself a decent MB independent yet buddy . Also worth knowing that auto gearbox oil and filter is recommended as a change every 40k miles :D , ( it avoids big bills :shock:)

Just to add to this thread in case of future searches, it’s common for the two tiny gas struts connected to the luggage seperator to get weak. When that happens they stop pressing the flap hard against the microswitch, and it can say “close seperator” when it appears it already is. Just saying ;)

Please ignore my stupidity but what’s a MB? I’m going to get full service on everything but not sure where to go. If anyone can recommend anywhere near Barnsley South Yorkshire I’d be very great full

Thanks Craig

MB = Mercedes Benz :D .
I’m sure someone will recommend an Independent for you , it’s often worth travelling to a garage where they know these cars

There is a specialist finder somewhere on the site , but I’m sure another member will recommend someone in your area at some point

We had the same boot separator warning light although not every time. Turns out that on the left hand side between the side of the car and the boot separator there was a coil of wires that had become loose and was blocking the boot separator from fully engaging. I am not exactly the most technical poster so that is not a great explanation - but if the other solutions do not work it is worth checking there is not something similar.

Once the coil was moved back out of the way it worked fine. Realise I must have done that when cleaning out the car which made it work again and then they gradually became lose again and so it stopped. Another time it started working again 'miraculously' after we drove it a bit on some bumpy ground - which must have jolted the cables back out of the way of the boot separator mechanism.

As a postscript to this - when the separator clicks into place with an audible click it sometimes does not work until it is very gently pushed back on the left hand side by the sensor. It needs a few millimeters and then there is a faint movement to the left and all is well. Odd but ultimately works fine now and has so far been reliable. No idea exactly what is going on but you might save yourself some money and trouble coaxing it a little before replacing things.
