The alarm on my 2003 SL500 appears to work OK (at least the flashing red LED comes on) but I don't get any kind of audio signal 'beep' as you get on most other vehicles.

Question is should there be and if so any ideas why I'm not getting one?

The indicators flash OK BTW

Does the siren work? They often don't.
I'd contest though that 'most other vehicles' beep when arming or disarming the alarm. Out of the 5 cars at our house only the Merc (ML) has the option of a beep (& that is definitely OFF)
I believe that some Mercs need STAR or other to enable the beep whereas later cars it's a user enabled option

The beep is so quiet that you need to be standing near the car to hear it.

It's louder than that on my ML & my neighbours S Class ..... & if it's that quiet why bother? I can hear the locks operate when the beep is disabled & see the button go down & see the indicators

I've never heard a siren and not sure how I would test it apart from smashing a side window or something!

I see the indicators, mirrors turn in and locks operate so yes I don't really need a 'beep'

Guess its just my OCD that says if it should work why doesn't it?

:(

Our 230 doesn't beep (thank god) but the alarm siren definitely works.

You just leave a window open, arm the car .... wait ... then wave your arms about inside the car

Or lock it with the fob, then open with the metal key 5 minutes later.

I read somewhere, not sure if true, that the older alarm sirens don't beep but the newer ones do. My siren on the SL definitely beeps.

True, I would think the beep is only a little louder than the locks operating on my SL.

No beeps from any of our SL's even the old r230, my Renault alarm barps every time it locks at 2:30am in the morning. Why do things sound 5 times louder at night

and do you have the option on the dash cluster to turn it off?
Something in the back of my mind says yes but I don't know for sure so I will look in the morning. I could be thinking of my Audi which definitely has the on/off option, I can even change the tone of the beep!

It all depends on what country the alarm is programmed for.
