My mates motorbike premium is over £300 (PER MONTH!)

Are motorcycles usually this expensive?

I imagine a huge element is the fact that it is a pretty decent new bike and they are like thief magnets in London... but still!

Some of the young lads at work have paid similar silly money for their car insurance. The last bike insurance I bought was less than £150 but I suspect I'm a little older than your mate

Bike theft is huge in London - another reason not to live anywhere near the place

Is he a new rider or not been insured for a while?
I had a cbr around 6 years ago, £67 fully comp. I was shocked it was so cheap !
My friends son has bought a scooby, £6500 per year as he is 19..
If you choose a high end vehicle at a young age or lack of experience then you are going to get hammered !

As with all insurance , postcode / NCB / points on licence / age / bike / security are the deciding factors.

If he is 19 , just passed his test but on maximum points ,living in Hackney ,with the bike parked down a lane with no security measures , with a few claims on his record then £3600 would be the norm , i guess.

If you are an old grunter like me you can insure two bikes FC for a year for less than one of your mates monthly payments.

A friend of mine mid 40's has a KTM Super Juke 12 months old. No accidents or convictions insurance is £2,400 PA.
He decided 6 months ago to move out of London because of the risk of bike thefts. Unfortunately 2 weeks ago a gang arrived late evening in a stolen van complete with battery powered angle grinder. Cut open his garage door, cut off his security chain & stole the bike. The bike was fitted with a tracker which he had turned off to save the battery while at home.
Two hours later the police called to say they had found the bike 3 miles away. The belief is they found the tracker on the bike so dumped the bike. Repair cost is £7K, & he has a £750 excess.

Not any good to me at my age, I would last about 15 minutes on it. Got a Yamaha FJR1300, can go 2 hours on that before stopping.

When I was still riding police bikes in about 2010 we had a demo BMW S1000RR about 201PS wet weight about 210Kgs.
The fastest bike I have ever ridder, a real pocket rocket.

Cool.. is it true that the police bikes are among the fastest on the road. Obviously with a few exceptions!?

I always love watching the rolling road blocks when there is a VIP convoy etc.. Were you ever in SEG?

No, it’s just the riders are more experienced and much better trained. They ride in all weathers and really understand their bikes and what they can and can’t do with them.
I knew a close protection officer that wore the sides of his boots out in one day riding in central London...

When I was riding we had BMW K1100's, Honda Pan Europeans 1100's & 1300's, & BMW R1200's. All sports touring bikes with a top speed of about 130-140mph. Sports bikes like the Fireblade, & R1 are considerably quicker, lighter & more power.
SEG is part of the Met police, & they are outstanding in their escort duties.
