A close shave.

Got stopped this evening for speeding. No excuse and I apologised immediately.

I hadn't noticed the unmarked car behind me as I pulled away from a roundabout and onto an empty dual carriagway. Not having used the car much lately, I gave it some right foot up to 50 something and eased off. Too late, the blue light was already on, and its a 40 limit which I was aware of.


By the time I'd pulled over and exited the car, my tax, insurance, MOT and ownership details had been checked. I just needed to confirm DOB and wait for the b0llocking.

It never came, and I thank the fact the officer was a petrol head himself and showed a lot of interest in the car. He said it was a credit to me to open the door and raise my hands and apologise, no ticket, but to take it easy on the acceleration. That was what drew his attention to me, not the 10+mph over the limit.

Feeling very relieved considering I've had two exceptionally quick cars for the last 7 years and this was the first stop. I'll be more careful in future

We've all had close shaves. I've lost count of mine when I was younger.

Closest was joining a motorway in my T5 Volvo. Floored it down the on ramp doing about 90 or so, merged over a noticed a car about 5 back behaving slightly unusually so backed right off. Said car caught up and slotted in behind and followed for about 15 minutes before overtaking whereupon the uniformed police officer in the passenger seat just waggled his finger as he went past.

A good outcome. Some compensation for the expense of running a fine car. Good manners always help too.

Yes I expect most of us have had occasion to breath a sigh of relief when an expected booking doesn't happen.
I could have lost my licence on a few occasions with silly speeds attained on motorways in the past.
I'd like to think my recognition of a fair cop helped him decide to let it go.

When I was in my teens and a Biker, a group of about six of us were doing over 80mph in a 30mph limited road. When we pulled up on the Market Square it wasn't long before a Ford Anglia Panda Car pulled up alongside us. Out stepped the Policeman and proceeded to give us a rollocking. During his rollocking he told us that should he have been able to catch us he would have pinched the lot of us.

Since that day I have only been booked for speeding twice and that was during the fuel crisis year back in, was it 73 ?, when I got done for doing 60mph in the blanket 50mph limit. In fact I got pinched twice within a week in the same spot. Since then nothing. What a good boy am I.

This thread is why I prefer Police Traffic Officers over cameras every time. A discussion is infinitely better for you than a windowed endeblope.

Go in with the right attitude and an pleasant outcome may well be yours.

I too have received leniency by a petrol headed officer of the law and also had a pair of traffic cops egging me on in my VXR before now ( no BS )

Wasn't the same bit of dual carriageway I got stopped on in 1983 for doing over 60 in the 450SE, that was a 40 zone
Best thing about that was I didn't get fined as I was leaving for NZ the following Monday and took the said car with me

My first ticket was in 1976 for doing 32 in a 30 zone, yep fined $30, second ticket 70 in a 30 zone the day after and again $30 Third ticket in 1986 for doing 131kph on the southern motorway at Drury, can't remember how much that ticket cost, then in 1996 80 in a 30 zone road testing the race car, it wasn't a waterboard vehicle with orange light on top of the roof parked on the side of the road, but police car driving towards me.......Big fine
My last ticket was in 2018, 38 mph in a 40 zone, that really browned me off
Well I thought it was a 40, but it was a 30 which I had just entered about 20 metres prior to seeing the man maned police camera van

My most expensive was going from Houston to San Antonio in 1998,the cop had fwd facing radar & came over the long grass in the central reservation like something out of a film.Cost me US $180,I gave him my Isle of Man licence hoping it might deter him but to no avail.Another much more friendly cop told me later that it would've caused him a lot of paperwork.

I was stopped in Nevada doing 80+ got away with a warning as the cop didn’t want the paperwork

Yes I'd been stopped before in Texas & warned,guess I ran out of luck.

Likewise in Washington State driving a friends F250 pickup - doing 70+ very nice highway patrolman, he was apologetic for not having any souvenirs for me

I have only been done by the automated kind (in the past 5 years or so anyway). Did get stopped by somebody who did not like the look of me. I accelerated rapidly up to the limit from a layby (stopped at 70mph).

The officer did not enjoy that and spend ages going through the car with a fine toothcomb and eventually gave me a ticket for number plate spacing. Not a great experience, bit of a shame really.

I had a policeman jump out in front of me in the 1970's near Watford.I was on leave from RAF Germany & my car had BFG plates so I concocted a story about my being called back being the reason for my haste & he let me off.

I've had a couple of close shaves in the Clio around London.

It's such a racy and noisy little thing that it just get lots of attention, good and bad!

It's better suited to being a garage queen when not en route to a track.
