The forum is here to offer whatever assistance members can offer.

Your suggestion is very valid but the OP initially asked for a garage or mechanic i.e. it looked as though he’d exhausted his own options.

IMO therefore, in the absence of another member/volunteer the best and potentially least costly suggestion was and still is to contact an Indy.
Thank you all for your valuable advice. I would like to do small bits of repair myself, but parking restrictions and not an excellent knowledge about the mechanism are my hurdles.

I hope you get it sorted Mercrams it'll be great to breathe some life into your car! Personally I don't/can't do a lot of these tasks myself nowadays (even when I know what to do) due to arthritis which puts the kyber on a lot of things. Luckily I have a extremely helpful local garage and for anything complicated I go to Mercland - Indy in Nuneaton.

Would not the symptoms signify a gunged up carb, possibly due to low mileage over the years? I have exactly the same symptoms on a car at the moment which hasn't been out for a good while. Carb rebuild kit on the way.

dave i did start at Mercrams first post and at the time was asking for ideas to what it could be . Others did say after that for him take it to the dealers . Any way Mercram will need to see what the garage can find wrong with it .

Fuel injection on this, even in '71!

Yes of course he will but he was looking for ideas while in his third post he said it was “going for a full service soon”.

Even - or maybe especially - a Mercedes of this age is worthy of having specialist knowledge applied when investigating issues. I think we would all hate to read about a long list of jobs “tried” without success when one of our Indy’s would hopefully know more about the car than a general garage.

I don’t know if Star was in use or proficient on a car of this vintage but I’ve lost count of the number of posts where an owner is asking for ideas but it’s never been on Star etc and usually the best and cost-effective advice we can offer is to contact an Indy.

As before, I’m sure we all wish Mercrams success!

Has the car been sitting unused for a while? Stale fuel can cause poor running issues. Anything over 12 months and it will be in a poor way.

Hmm now that’s a thought - doesn’t matter who looks at it if the fuel in the tank’s gone “bad”...

Well, it's interesting to wonder whether working on cars will get better or not - they certainly ought to be cleaner but they'll still involve bending/stretching and lying on concrete.

But the way things are going, the first major change i.e.: all-electric - is more or less upon us and I cannot imagine anyone getting pleasure from tuning up a 'leccy engine to improve performance and I don't suppose there's much a service engineer or owner can do to improve economy either. I'm fairly sure private individuals won't be allowed to work on them anyway - I read some Elf and Safety basics recently in an article about the effects of the changeover on "all makes" workshops of today and for a start, if there is just ONE electric vehicle being worked on in a conventional (i.e.: petrol/diesel etc) shop it said that it will require a "fenced off" safety zone to keep unqualified personnel out.

- It will also be interesting to see what inspection process is put in place to replace the MOT as IC engines are phased out. I suppose the tester will have to be trained on camera work as well as sensor electronics so I expect one or two overpaid "in" sultants are working out how to make it nice and costly and complicated already!

Then, as the grey hair expands we can probably anticipate the regulation that says "You WILL have an electric self-driving car otherwise at your age (49?) you're banned...(and successive governments will tinker with the age for purely political reasons so it could quite quickly be mandatory for anyone over 40)!

OMG... the brave new world!

Hello
Unfortunately Wayne Gates won't be able to deal with this old car. Is there somewhere I can find a manual or the component diagram, so I can have a go at it. I wish I could at least make it move to take to a garage.
Thank you

Hello
It hasn't been used past 4 months and I took for two long drives (400 miles) past couple of weeks until that specific problem developed.
