Gina passed her test in Thames in the 70's. It was taken with the local traffic cop in a town with one set of traffic lights and no roundabouts. Driving in Sauf London was a bit of a supprise.

Rory, so sorry to hear of this trauma over the past 24 hours.. as others have said, the car did it's job and kept the occupants safe.

Hopefully the other passengers can make a solid recovery too.

So glad that everyone is safe Rory, what an awful thing to happen.

Thank you!
Yep - we all read about accidents on the road and it washes over our heads until it happens close to home. The one thing I have learned is I need a dash cam. I've never had an accident in 50 year of driving but have had a few near misses due to numpties on the road.

Thanks. Apparently the passenger has some broken bones but is expected to recover.

I took mine in the big smoke (Auckland) however even the route chosen by the traffic officer had no traffic lights or roundabouts. That said the test was otherwise very comprehensive with angle parking, parallel parking, reversing around a corner, three point turn (fail if you touch kerbs or need more than three points) and a hill start on a very steep junction.
The test was also in 3 parts - a multi choice written test requiring 23/25 correct, an oral test requiring 4/5 correct (administered by traffic officer selecting randomly from road code) and the practical last.

Ours in SA were pretty much the same, only with a manual gearbox and they always chose the busy roads. We also had pass an eyetest.

Testers were usually Afrikaans speaking (who hated the English speaking minority) and I think, took it as a personal challenge to fail an English speaker if they could.

My mother was MD of a company at the time and they had a messenger / driver (his name was Innocent) - he was a lovely guy and gave me most of my driving lessons and I passed without any problems.

Some nasty little waste of space who needs euthanising swifly drove into the back of my car. He had no insurance and was a total wide-boy, I had no dash cam. It took months to prove he was at fault.
I now have dash cams in every car I own as a result.
Most people are snakes in the grass. I should drive a lawnmower.

When I was in my early 20s stopped in traffic on a hill the guy ahead of me rolled backward into me and damaged the front of my (company) car. He apologised profusely, gave me his card and said he'd get it all sorted. I gave the details to our vehicle manager.....guess what....the guy who'd hit me denied it and said that I drove into him.........

I don't trust anybody outside of my close family circle and even then, there are some that are not trustworthy.
