I suspect that the engine only completely stops on models that have a Belt Integrated Starter Generator, which makes restarting the engine easier and smoother. Was reading about BISG in Autocar the other day...

that's the set up that Smart used on their 'mhd' (mini hybrid ..... just marketing for stop/start) .... they modified one of the tensioners 3 times as the belt is bow string tight & it pulls out of the block .... not their greatest invention

Gliding / rolling is a great way to achieve higher mpg, spinning an engine at 1500 + revs is very energy expensive, only should be in gear if you want to drive the vehicle or slow the vehicle.

This tech has been on HGVs for quite some time, some of the systems even anylise roads from shared data from many other HGVs and can put the wagon into roll just before the brow of a hill and will put it back into gear as it is approaching roundabouts and bends.

Two additional observations I have made from our GLA from other observations already mentioned in this thread; It will automatically come out of roll / glide if you get too close to the vehicle in front (I guess this shows the autonomous braking system is being observant?) and it also comes out of glide if the cornering is too fast.

Can i program my car 2011 e250 cdi wtih 7G+ box to make glide work mode ?
I've seen it activate in a facelift model 2014 plate and its quite a nice feature to have . I checked gearbox code on bell housing and its the same as mine.

Has anyone retro-activated it ?

From reading this thread as you had bumped it. They
dont half put some gimmicks on cars now a days.

Does not answer your question bit. But I get the impression glide mode is only on hybrids.

I suspect that it a feature only available on the W213 E-Class with the 9G gearbox.

Are you technically in legal
Pretty much so, the 9g box feels just like a manual knocked out of gear. Great for economy
Control then?, wud say plod wud take a dim view of coastin in a manual. Ie stick in neutral.

I would expect that the car had the 9G gearbox then. Never heard of a 7G having the coasting capability...

Well it met type approval…;)
Touch the accelerator or brake and it fully responds, no issues with taking your foot off the gas in a manual or automatic going down a hill. The 9g box just puts less drag on the drivetrain when your foot is off.

Mine has it in Eco mode - not a hybrid

Mines a 3ltr V6 diesel GLC and I started the thread, I’m using the eco mode a lot more with current fuel prices and welcome the gliding mode  it ain’t no gimmick

I believe that it also disengages the (regenerative) charging system....mine only seems to work in ‘CV' mode ("Curve tilt” in cars with ABC) and while I have not checked properly I ‘think' that it is more economical than ‘C' mode.

Reading my comment back, it seems a bit brutal.....sometimes, the written word does not come across as intended....no intent to offend.:)
ha ha not taken at all. One has to read between the lines with posts and take it from there.
