I new someone years ago that had a SEL 280 badged up to a 500 It did look the part though as it had chrome wheel arch trims and wider wheels and if I'm not mistaken it was lowered slightly as well

Why?

Why do people do that?

I put the owners of contrived (personal) number-plates and dressing a car up to look like something better in the same box......

Loser.

I don't get it!

De badging started out as a way for those who could have the ‘top notch’ spec to hide it from lesser mortals.

As always it was just about money!

Now those that don't have money debadge to hide the fact that they are driving a poverty pack! I've had a few poverty packs in my day but never debadged.

Probably some do, Rory, but, also it does look, neater and less cluttered and an added bonus, a tad easier to clean, no fannying about in between the letters/numbers. :)

I didn't debadge either of my W211s. 1 was poverty spec, the other fully loaded.
I did debadge me W221, and me current W166. Both fully loaded. List price above £75k each, but I didn't pay anywhere near that on either.

Nothing to do with money.
Nothing to do with hiding the spec.

Looks much cleaner than the scripture to the apostles on the latter 2 in comparison to just 4 digits on the former on one side of the boot lid.

I was going to put the devil tail , horns and trident on the 3 pointed star on the current W166, but it don't fit, so just the star it is :geek::rolleyes::shock::D:cool:

You cant tell if a car is "fully loaded" just by the badge so debadging is only really relevant if the vehicle is from the bottom of the range. :)

Struggling to comprehend where you link relevance to bottom of the range tbh. Welcome an explanation as I only debadged a flagship Mercedes, a S Klasse, on my first attempt and a mid range GLE on my second attempt, but left 2 other mid range E Class as standard.

Or is range defined by Classic / Elegance / Avantgarde in the case of the E's I didn't debadge. At that time the range badge was in the trim strip on the lower rear section of the front wing on each side, I recall. One was a Classic, the other Avantgarde. Although Elegance was the top of the range, with Avantgarde being the sportier range that had more toys as standard over the Elegance

The S was just an S with lots of toys, no range designation badging.

The GLE is an AMG Line Premium Pack Plus plus bits. The scripture to the apostles was something like 'GLE350 AMG 4Matic' that looked awful imho hence it was debadged, which is the relevance in my mind for this car  or my personal choice.

Reading through all these brings back a memory going back 30 yrs or so of an Ford Escort badged up as a 1100 mexico but shoehorned in was an essex V6 3Ltr That certainly gave the boy racers something to think about.:D

What I was alluding to is how does the badge on the back indicate that the car is fully loaded with options? A C180 is still badged as a C180 no matter what options are installed. :)
