Smart + others :)
It's also 15 years old - "There's no such thing as an old Porsche - just a new owner" :D
It's gone up in Value - it's a Porsche not a Mercedes...:p

I doubt it’s gone up much, given the cost of annual servicing and repairs especially if driven, break even unless it’s a garage Queen and not driven. Did the figures on one of my toys and it’s sort of broke even, even after replacing the carbon ceramics. So didnt make much apart from smiles per mile, then again didn’t cost much??? When sold.

It’s not made much from when I first bought it. More than money in the bank though and it looks good and brings me a great deal of pleasure, which money never does.

It looks very good and could sell well. How many used cars for sale look good but require work... this forum would be pretty quiet if the used cars were as good as described...

Neither the 911 or Landy are for sale which is why I’m getting the work done.

It gives some work to some local specialists that I value. This allows them to keep their businesses going providing employment for them and their staff. I’m single handedly keeping the economy going up here

Which specialist are you using for each of them?

That looks like a 200 or 300Tdi ?

We have a 1996 300 Tdi, 90 with some of the same issues. We have owned it since it was 7 years old.

However our issues have been dealt with gradually over the years, not all at once.

The only thing you don't mention is rear cross member. We had a rear quarter section, we have never had bulkhead issues, although both footwells have been welded, and no outrigger problems. This comes down to keeping the chassis clean after off roading.

Welding is usually cheap to do (never more than £100 so far) and we have found a local garage that likes working on them,

Engines are bomb proof, 300,000 miles is common.

Well worth fixing.

200tdi
I bought the Landy in 2012 as an MOT failure from work for £200  because of the rear crossmember being rusty.
I had a new one welded on so that is still good.

My SL does so few miles I estimate the cost per mile so far is around £4.90!

IMS Rear Main Seal Leak - replace with Single Row Pro IMS Retrofit

Is that to replace the bearing..?

I read previously that if you redline the car (once properly warmed up) for a bit, every time you take it out it prevents the IMS breaking up. The high RPMs get oil into the bearing.

It's big leap of faith theory though..

I love the Porsche. I don't know them well but is that a 997? If you need a hand keeping it lit, I am at your disposal :D Bucket list car.

I voted Defender because I imagine rates + parts are pricier on the Porsche, but's probably a tossup.

It is to replace the bearing ~£1,400 for that bit of the job - 9 hours labour.

With the 3.8 engine you really need to ensure the water and oil are at full temp before ragging it. Otherwise it can be a ~£14,0000 bill... due to the pistons slapping around in the bores.
Personally I’d not cane any engine until it’s properly warmed up.
It is a 997, I’ve not heard from the garage this week and I’ve been too busy to call in and check up on it.
I plan a visit to the patient next week :)

Best of luck with it. I did mean to wait until it was properly warmed up before booting it.. i'm only passing on what I have read. I've not had the pleasure of driving a Porsche yet.

Back in the early days of my career I was a car salesman for a high end sports car dealer called Performance Autos near Cambridge. It was there I had the opportunity to drive a Porsche. Bearing in mind it would probably have been a 60/70’s car I was a bit disappointed with it. I can’t remember which model it was, apart from the fact it was Black but I remember one of the things that struck me was the strange positioning of the pedals plus it didn’t go like a scalded cat as I thought it would. :(

The one that did stick in my mind was the Jensen Interceptor which I loved. I also had the opportunity to drive a Pagoda which I also loved. Memorable days indeed. :)

They only had a 2.0 ltr engine, tiny compare to the Jensen...

The Jensen had a glorious iron V8 as you know and it just sounded and went beautifully and the FF actually handled OK of sorts :D

That’s where the 911 wins out.
I was watching the Spa Classic in 2015 and a 60’s 911 came 10th beating quite a few GT40’s...

911s do take some getting used to for sure. They have their quirks especially the older ones. But for what they do, there is nothing like them. Have had a couple of 996 and a 997.2. They are awesome cars and actually fairly reliable. The 996 and 997.1 non GT / turbo cars may offer some scary bills with regards to engine, but good to see OP taking the correct preventative measures. Looking forward to hearing the result in terms of £.

Have to laugh reading various comments regarding Porsches, having owned FE porsches for about 25 years before advancing years forced me to sell my 968 cab for the current SLK280. I would never have contemplated buying any version of the 911 except perhaps the 964 - but for fun and practical use you won't beat a 968 coupe. Tried doing a supermarket run in any version of the 911, Boxster or Cayman - forget it! 968 drop the rear seats and throw the shopping in! We went to Le Mans camping in our 968 coupe - 4 berth tent, inflatable bed, chairs, table, carpets and 2 bulky sleeping bags plus 2 peoples clothes etc for 5 days, sunroof panel on top and rear view mirror still useable, and still space for some essential liquid shopping on the way home! Can't contemplate that in the SLK or any version of the 911!

That's how I'm justifying a turbo for myself.. Need to get a job first. :(
