Hi When my run flats wear out I'm going to replace them with normal tyres {as mentioned in other threads ) My question is which tyres would be the best. As I am in my sixties I am no longer a boy racer so I will never use the car to its full potential, so I think a mid range tyre would suffice.

Thoughts please.

You sound like a pretty similar driver to me so I would go for a tyre with a low decibel rating. I inherited Nexen on my current car, a tyre that I wouldn't have chosen myself. In fact they are not bad, definitely quieter that the Pirelli P Zero's I had on my previous MB :)

I'd recommend Goodyear EfficientGrip if they do them in the size you need. Quiet and great in the wet

I'm of a similar age to the op and with similar driving style and view. I elected to have Goodyear Efficient Grip fitted to my recently departed 202. Although coming under the premium category, the pricing was reasonable and l felt they were really good tyres. I'd definately buy them again.

Uniroyal Rainsports but I haven’t tried the latest version. They replaced Conti’s which were good, but Rainsports were about 20% cheaper & are wearing well.
I have had Khumo & Falken in the past cheaper but the wear rate was high.
I have Bridgestone on the SLC at the moment original fitment, not one I had ever thought of buying. But they are going to last longer than the Conti’s I had on the SLK, & I have no complaints with them.

Test and evaluation here .

I don't really know why people ask the question on forums for people's 'professional' opinions on tyres when there is more detailed information from both professional and public on
'tyre reviews' than you can skake a stick at to make an informed decision .

They are not, they are asking for an opinion on what you use and if you would recommend them / use them again

Lots of valid points here, if I was you put your tyres into a site like blackcircles and see the data for the tyre type (noise, fuel and wet grip).

Although some people say avoid x because y, its actually tyre specific to each car, for example p zeros are horrible on my w220 but are great on my w251.
Each car is different and has different handling requirements vis a vis a same tyre compound.

just becasue a brake pad from compnay x is good on mini doesnt mean its good on a ferrari

Still silly , you aren't going to get as much information or as many opinions .

So everyone on this forum who asks for a personal opinion about a tyre is silly rather than just use online reviews????

People research things in different ways and you can't always relate a test on a tyre fitted to a Golf to every car, there are too many variables and handling characteristic differences but hey, the 5 years I spent selling Tyres may not count for much

Take the fairly new Uniroyal Rainsport 5 .

At the end of the day your tyre choice will be influenced by your driving style. The OP has said that he isn't a boy racer and yet a lot of the responses appear to have come from folks you are. I am in the same category as the OP. I am not a boy racer and therefore do not need the ultimate wet grip performance nor do I need the ultimate grip for track days.

Obviously I need tyres that give me confidence in them but a more important thing than all of the ultimates is a quiet tyre. As I said I inherited Nexen's on my current car, not a tyre that I would have chosen myself but I will have to live with them for the time being. Actually they are not that bad. The offer sufficient grip for my style of driving and they are certainly quieter that the P Zero's that were on my previous MB. The positive side of them is that they are a mid range price tyre so they are kinder to your wallet. Would I replace them with more Nexen's ? I might just do that, they certainly do what I want them to do :)
