Hi, I have just spent £200 on a new glow plug controller only to be told I have to spend another £325 on new glow plugs, I understand this could be a tricky job. I have been driving with the warning lights on now for over a year without any issue; is renewing the glow plugs really necessary?

I thought glow plugs cost about £40-80 for a set of 6 and an hour to fit ?

I did mine (om642) with no issues. Just soaked the plugs over the course of a week, and used a 1/4 impact driver. Seems a good way to reduce the risk of snapping them.

modern cars use the glow plus on and off throughout the time the engine is running. they chop in and out based on running conditions and temps. hence why there's a controller ?

they are a normal service item... check on eBay on a BM its normal to buy the controller and the plugs as a set - every 60k miles
the ones in yours are no different.... its all beru stuff

Morning,
Here's a relay query - code reader showed glow plug 2 as open circuit, so checked that the power feed was good with multi-meter and replaced the glow plug - code not listed anymore, however now showing glow plug 5 as open circuit. That glow plug was replaced at same time as number 2, so any suggestions as that code has never been listed before?
Keep reading that relays are prone to failing. How can you test if that is the case?
Thanks

I think the relays failing is indicated by trouble starting ? Or at least that was my relay symptoms

A while back ... a local indie said that STAR had indicated that number 5 glow plug on my R Class was goosed but he also suggested it could be the relay. In the event it was the relay
