hi,
when I bought this car it had this problem and it annoys me every time I open or close the drivers side door, basically you here a loud clicking like as if a metal plate is springing back against another, that clicks twice every time i open or close the door, all the other doors open quietly as you'd expect,

I've looked at the W213 door hinges and they seem to be welded shut so i cannot see what is wrong or how to fix it,
has anyone any ideas about what the issue is and how to fix it ?

cheers
niall

i'm not sure, i think its the lower of the two hinges, i'll take some video of it today to show you where the sound is coming from, also i cannot see any way to lubricate it... it's not like previous models

Smart + others :)
No check strap, look for a small stub of a bolt, poss 6 or 7mm on the hinge and tighten.

Hi,

I too have recently bought a year old w213 and since receiving it have found the drivers door is making the clicking sound and not always closing at first attempt.

I have seen your solution above to tighten a 7mm nut on the lower hinge. I have tried this but it does not move. I am interested to know how much force you needed to apply to turn the nut? Was there a lot of resistance or very little?
I am afraid of ringing the nut or threads and very interested to know of your experience and force required.

Unfortunately with current Covid-19 restrictions it is not easy to get to MB dealer for them to take a look.

Many thanks!

mine was loose and didn't need much force at all to tighten. are you sure the clicking noise i reported is coming from your lower hinge

Hm, thank you for confirming. The click in mine is not so loud so difficult to tell where it comes from. I feel the two pops more so. I have a 2017 that opens smoothly. Thanks anyway, perhaps I will need to wait to get access to the dealership.

what i did was to put my finger tips on the lower hinge while moving the door open/close to see if i could feel the click, that was how i narrowed it down to the lower hinge, have you verified that ? the 7mm nut is below the line of sight of the hinge, so at first glance you won't see it (it's under the hinge from memory)

Just joined this forum to find an answer to this problem and it worked like a charm. 7mm socket, tightened both bolts and no noise. Perfect! One more note though, on my E200 D there is a black plastic cap over the bolt head that looks exactly like the bolt. Don’t be fooled, it comes off easily.

In my case the 7mm bolt was tight but still the sound was coming, my technician loosen the bolt a bit and got me to slightly lift the door and tighten the bolt and the sound is gone.

Had the same issue with my driver side door today, did a google search, and this thread popped up, did as suggested, and job done, forums are such useful places, saves going to dealers/indy’s, when something so simple can be done by yourself.

Big thanks to star, and anyweb.

I had the same problem and it was driving me insane. I thought it was going to be a new hinge.
Massive thanks to both anyweb and star!!!!!

Just purchased a 2018 E300 and dealer delivered with that noise. This thread was awesome. Much easier to pull out a 7mm socket and tighten the lower bolt in 30 seconds compared to taking back to the dealer to repair. Thank you
