Smart + others :)
The proper fix is a new tank, we have seen some bodges (rivets drilled into tank, in so getting a fuel smell in boot). We know there is a different, cheaper way round now but we do not offer that service.

Hi @SL55 Mark

Sorry to hear you have had this issue.. it's ****** annoying isn't it. It happened to me a couple weeks ago too.. have you decided on a course of action for a solution yet?

We had the repair done to our first r230. It involves removing the boot trim to access the fuel tank sender unit. Then this is removed so you can see the loose baffle inside the tank. A small hole is drilled through the baffle and a spring attached which holds the baffle in place. It takes around an hour if that and the chap charged us £60 (he actually charged less than that but we paid him more because he said our baffle had broken away from the normal part and was harder to sort)
Never had any further issues with a loose baffle for the next 3 years.
The chap who did ours was on the forum for a while but hasn't been seen for a good number of years.
I have seen a chap on the ebay that charges £350 for the same work

Do you know who did this repair. For £60 i'd be more than happy to outsource it.

I am likely to not get tot this until the new year as I am winding down R230 Operations soon enough for winter.

Yes Conor, it was user name Jameson or something like that and he was on the forum, must be 5 years ago at least that he was on here. He had an R230 too and did his own tank baffle.

Thank you. It seems he isn't really around these parts anymore :(

I will get round to this, it's just easier to drive another car. I did bring the SL to work this morning, and I must say the bonging didn't bother me too much, I have got used to it.

Hi Conor, Sorry to hear it has happened to you. In time you will get used to it, I find it quite soothing.

If you could get the baffle out, perhaps you could you fill your tank with fuel tank baffle foam?

Yea it's not thaaaat bad really. Just an annoyance really that something is not right. I like the idea of the car being in perfect working order.

I'll get to the tank in summer.

If you keep the tank full, you'll get no bong noises ;)
If you keep the tank empty you'll get no bong noise either ;).............though I'm guessing this isn't helping :D

I expect you don’t get any “bong” noises if you don’t drive it either...

This bing bongs all the time.. Alex Foti reckons it's broken in multiple places.

It's beggers belief really.

On t'other side I see a few guys (at least one) brought cases against MB here in the UK and won. I should try it on with my 16 YO car and see how I do.

I wonder where the law stands with that. For example, there is precedent that a court ruled in favour of plaintiff that there was a fault.. I wonder does my opportunity to complain via courts expire or have any bearing on that ruling? Genuinely curious.

Who supplied the fuel tanks for MB originally, they'd be half to blame for the quality.
There was not enough welds on the baffles apparently when the r230 first came into production and after a few years the welds started to break.
I was under the impression that MB replaced some of the tanks under warranty. However there was a time limit with their generosity and many claim's weren't recognised after that period.
This was in the UK.
I maybe wrong on this, it was what I was told by a reasonably reliable source.
Conor, there's no harm in putting your claim in, you'll have to go to the right MB Dealer though, bit like buying the winning euro millions lottery ticket ;)

Sounds like the baffle has broken away from both welds, top and bottom :( that could be a right pain.
