Rishi Sunak eyes 'pay-by-the-mile' road pricing scheme ahead of £40bn tax threat from electric vehicle drive - report | Business News | Sky News

Has this been done yet?
Anyway no surprise that this is on the cards, but how, and when?

Will be be caused to install GPS mileage tracking units, a sort of tachograph?
I can see that as the favoured outcome for this. Then the unit can be checking location, speed and more I'm sure. An uncomplicated phone app is capable now but the unit would be required to be designated to the vehicle and checked for calibration come MOT time I imagine.

How long before this is a compulsory set up? I would have thought years rather than months.

I can see it being years away too.
A lot of boxes to make and fit and pretty sure many will have “teething problems”, power losses and “accidents”.

Another lucrative job for an mp’s friend.

Having enough problems installing the infrastructure for a few charging points.

More cynicism, but I see the tracking as a handy way of monitoring movement (sim card download).
Great for policing and criminal capturing. Not so good if there are increased travel control measures applied down the line.

Such a shame as they are a real alternative to cars in cities and really can and are used to reduce motorised transport across Europe. It's just in Britain there's a weird desire to restrict people's mobility and an unhealthy obsession for the public to follow laws no matter how dumb. Here they've been legalised for 4 years and people were riding them illegally for years before that.

No doubt in the UK they probably want them to carry numberplates and insurance before legalising them because the public just couldn't be let be to go about their business without needless bureacracy or an overly complex solution to a problem that doesn't exist

Methinks that's a must.
Push bikes get a free pass and often take the p as they are anonymous. Add to that these leccy scooters and more cars are going to left saying "what was that" and pedestrians jumping for safety.
As a rental though, in a Boris Bike set up, I'm not sure how individuals using them can be held responsible.

We might find out just how crunchy visiting tourist are though.

Yes but then where do you stop. Looking it as a free pass is the wrong way to see it; pedestrians can kill cyclists and even other pedestrians by making cars swerve. I could drop something off my 5th floor balcony and kill someone, i could crash on a ski slope, etc. There are many obscure ways people can accidentally or negligently kill others but the overriding principle has to be that people are still free to do things without insurance, number plates, restrictions etc. That's not a free pass, that's the default starting position.

It's only when an activity is proven to cause significant amounts of damage or causes many deaths that then it's use becomes restricted and it requires number plates, regulations, insurance etc and it's worth regulating. That's why push bikes get a "free pass" but 44 ton trucks have tachographs and special licences; because bikes and scooters cause literally no damage and cause such a tiny amount of deaths in the grand scheme of things it's not worth bothering about.

We don't ever get figures on accidents caused by cyclists so we can't quantify it.

We do get figures from cyclists killed or injured and they obviously lean one way because of the physics.

Mixing the heavy steel with the light and vulnerable is not something you would do in your shopping bag so why do we throw the science away on roads.

By the way I cycle defensively and have no wish to have my "rights" engraved on my tombstone

As long as it takes for The Reasonable Centrist Party started by Farage to start poking holes in the restriction of freedom this represents.

It will get dropped again just like the last time they tried to rob us....... Look at the state of the roads we pay for already and we then get screwed over with insurance companys who try every way possible to get out of a claim. Same old story hitting the motorist again

If its introduced before an election, the party that implements it will most likely not be elected.
Labour thought about it, and quickly dropped the idea due to public backlash.

The speeding comes to an end point sounds attractive, to some.
But then the Gov't would need to recoup that massive loss of tax elsewhere.
Then there are the courts that would be freed up to take care of criminals, but there would be more of those as all those less hindered policemen could do more police work.
I can't decide if this would result in increased unemployment of those that no longer administrate speeding fines.
