So OP - does yours fall within the date/VIN ranges?
If not you can point the finger firmly back at MB.

As regards the quantity of oil lost to cause a catastrophic failure modern engine undertrays can hold oil so it’s not as easy to spot small leaks nowadays, it would be interesting to know what actually failed and why

When I leased the E300 Hybrid via Hitachi Finance there was a recall (cannot remember what) but I received notification from the dealership via a phone call to book it in and a letter from Hitachi Finance.

I suspect a breakdown in coms from the leasing company in which case I would assume it’s their car and their problem.

Dragging this to the top again, as they are still out there. The AA recovered a 2014 E250 cdi to my 'shop today. Something of a mess underneath, the entire contents of the engine sump were spread liberally across the underside. The timing chain tensioner had backed right out. I put four litres of oil in it initially and it threw the whole lot out again in twenty seconds of running. New sealing ring and refitted the tensioner and the owner has got away with it - engine runs fine. Lucky escape.

Anyway, there are obviously still cars out there that slipped through the recall net.

- Hi Uncle Benz,

Sorry to drag this up again, my Mercedes B class 2014 has done the above but seized the engine, I’ve been quoted £17,000 by Mercedes to have it replaced. My car had the recall done in early 2015. Is there a chance they didnt do the replacement to a satisfactory standard? Any help appreciated! Got a right fight on my hands with Mercedes. Only had the car 1 year and 5 months.

If the tensioner has backed out again, and they were the last to touch it, then yes, they must have messed it up. Proving it is going to be a whole nest of vipers though, I’m afraid. Does it have a solid main dealer service history?
