Hmm I could be tempted but the price is a bit too high for starters and I would worry about it rapidly turning into a money pit. It does look to be in good condition though (apart from the stretchihg on the driver's seat cushion - must've done a lot of solo miles).

And swmbo would probably kill me - slowly and painfully!

I love a fast estate. Ticks the daily driver box, the sports/powerful car box and 'I need to move a wardrobe' box. What's not to like?

I also agree with powerhouse estate cars. All the practicality and grunt in a practical package. You just have to look at things like the Audi RS4 which originally only came as an estate, Volvo with the 850/v70R back in the day. I think it’s rare to see a manufacturer that ALWAYS offers a sports estate and can only think of Audi and Mercedes always producing such an option. I understand they go every bit as well as their saloon rivals. BMW occasionally dip their toes in the water with an M5 estate but, flop in sales compared to Merc/Audi.

My mechanic says, ‘I can put all my trackday/Nurburgring spares in it, sleep in it, and blast around a track’.

Can’t argue with that.

I love estates, wouldn’t be without my boat (affectionately named by my wife) and if I could justify an AMG I’d have one already

I fully endorse what MB have done with AMG estates regarding why they exist I’d certainly have one if I could justify the costs. I’ve been pondering changing mine to a BM 535i/440i but it won’t carry what the S212 will (which I know would totally frustrate me at times) so I’ve binned that idea in favour of a S213 E43/53 at some point - more than enough power for me on UK roads

You are absolutely right there Malcolm, the 5 (G31) has nowhere near the load capacity of the S212 and if you're looking for a petrol 6cyl used they are rarer than hen's teeth presently, hence my Diesel foray...E43 would be the way forward for sure. A cracking one came up just after I bought the BMW but was a bit rich for my budget anyway

I'm sure Audi started off the craze with the RS2. It was in estate form only and had 315BHP and was joint engineered by Porsche. No options were available as all the boxes were ticked. This was in 1994 I think and if you seem any for sale today, they are around £40k+

Off the top of my head, I think that was the first serious ultra high performance estate. I recall that one always being pricey. There is one tucked away in Beeston, Nottingham in light blue (can't recall the technical name for the colour). Audi have always carried it on and to be honest, didn't even need to bring out the saloon RS's model as people who wanted one, would just happily buy the estate. Nice to see Merc offering the AMGs in estate guise also. IIRC the Merc's have a nifty loading bed feature as well, how impressive is that to watch at B&Q!
