Not been in yet as a result of lockdowns and tier three, I'm not travelling. Interesting you say that, it was something I had considered - my 220d was primarily run on Sainsbury's diesel, however I have been using Shell Ultimate (or whatever it's called) in the 400d. I have been wondering whether to switch to Sainsbury's and see if I still get the same issue. Can't really see why the OM654 should be so different to the OM656.
Did you ever get a response to this from the dealer? Was it normal behaviour?

Lol, nothing of any use. Their response was to ask me to keep a record of milage and fuel every time I filled up. Doesn't help as the short bursts of poor economy get lost in the overall data.

Shame! Wouldn’t expect something like that to be happening so regularly. So you still don’t know if it’s normal or not?

I’ve just bought an E220 but I’m already considering upgrading to an E400! I miss the power of the Audi I got rid of and an E400 would match up pretty well.. but the Audi also got 45-50mpg (3.0 v6) so it was justifiable to use it for commuting. Sounds like the E400 might struggle to get near that?

It depends on where and how you drive, but I get 43 - 45 mpg on my daily commute (33 miles each way, mix of motorway and cross country) and comfortably over 50 mpg on a motorway drive, and have had over 60 mpg on a run from B'ham to Southampton (M5 / A34)

Whilst it is slightly annoying as I don't understand why it is doing it, the occasional poor fuel consumption makes minimal difference overall. Last 2000 miles I have averaged 41.5 mpg on the computer. TBH, I don't really notice that much difference in consumption between the 220d I had before and the 400d -maybe 10%, and it's worth it for the extra power for sure!

That seems about the same as the Audi. Long term over 11,000 miles it was 42mpg. My E220 seems to get 55 easily and recently I had high 60s and on the motorway for an hour and a half it was showing 76mpg! But i still miss the overtaking power..

On a semi related subject, is the fuel tank on the E400 66 litres, the same as the E220? Some sources are saying it’s 50 litres, including parkers.

Yes, it's 66 litres same as the 220d. Don't know where Parker's get their info from...
