I'd be surprised if anything pre Gen 4 (D type) is that clever.

Sold - 2021 CLA 35 Premium.
'Sleep mode' is a fairly recent introduction by a number of car manufacturers in response to the theft problem.
I think it began around 2019.

I wish you would tell this to the insurance companies, my insurance premium increased once the car was parked in the garage. Their reply to my query was, 'Statically more vehicles are stolen from locked garages'
Which is where one previous post of mine was when I said to them, 'in that case I will put a neon flashing light on top of the car staying keys in ignition'
I am sure no vehicle has been stolen like that so premium should be the lowest!
I served for 20 years as a police officer retiring in 2001, what a great pension scheme!
In all that time I never attended or heard of a car being stolen out of a garage.
Remember in the 80's car thefts were epidemic.

I asked a guy at my local MB dealer about this, not having found any explanation in my car's 400 page handbook. I think he more or less confirmed what you said, but he told me that all MBs defaulted to that setting automatically shortly after they'd been locked. I think he said 10 minutes, or it could have been 20, he lost me halfway through his explanation, but anyway, he told me that double clicking wasn't really necessary.
My understanding is that the keys ‘go to sleep’ if they are unmoving for a period of time, so if you leave them on a stable surface then after a few minutes the keyless should turn off but it starts again when you pick the keys up. This is pretty hard to test, however!

The keyless entry stays on if you have them in your pocket and are walking around, of course. So this would make the car vulnerable while you are at work or similar and don‘t want to leave the keys unattended at your desk.

Double-clicking turns off the keyless immediately and until you manually use the unlock button; it’s definitely the most secure option.

Just to clarify on the ”newer” keys - these were introduced mid 2018 and I have them on my car manufactured 9/18. They have a motion sensor which turns off the signal when the key has been motionless for a minute or two.

I tested mine in the garage. Locked the car, as normal, placed the key on a shelf next to the car and went back a few minutes later. Car wouldn’t open on the handle. Moved the key and then tried again and it opened.

That can't be correct as if the keyless entry were disabled automatically they wouldn't work after 10 or 20 minutes (or whatever the time period was). I suspect he was talking about deadlocking.
....or maybe the latest keys that that have a movement sensor and go to sleep after a period of no movement?

Ernie

ps. Didn't get as far as the above before posting!

Want to scare yourself? You can double the range of your remote locking by holding the tip of your key to your temple, open your mouth wide and press the button.

It's a shame then that you need to be stood next to your Merc to shut windows & roof using the silly infra-red window in the door lock.

Haven't managed the southern hemisphere yet, thanks to Covid but its on the list.

Hopefully come October we will be in the Southern Hemisphere?
Covid did stop us from being there last April
