Thanks for all your advice - I will take note.

All fixed, problem caused by finger handle on boot lid sticking. Once this was released (more wd40) everything ok and boot opens with key. Just got to sort out the microswitch or cable now to get electronics to open the boot now. Thanks for your help, especially Blobcat.
