I'm afraid we do a fair amount of chains on these engines.
Normally we seem to do them on ML's.
the chains are usually quite slack when they are rattling and you won't get away with just tensioner. although it's always worth a go.
This is not a job you want to do twice. Why risk it. Important to use genuine parts, especially the tensioner, the design of which has been modified many times by mercedes.
Unfortunately the later 642 is susceptible to bottom end issues. I can't see what the actual diagnosis is? Is it seized?
I have had several of these shoot a rod through the block. Given that we sell hundreds of 642 engined cars a year, we have only replaced a handful.
They tend to go suddenly...
To do it properly and legally, you need all the bits which isn't easy.
Headlamps, ballasts that live in wheel arch area, level sensor and all associated wiring back to the fuse box...
So you really want a donor car...
Ps i paid 250 for just a replacement ballast recently so I doubt it will...
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but these a class petrols go through timing chains...
I assume the quote you had is for a new chain and tensioner. If so that's pretty reasonable.
Unfortunately the timing chain on these engines sees many of these scrapped, as you can pick up another...
They have been replacing them f.o.c for all customers I have sent to the dealer, after they have come to us for diagnosis.
I heard a while ago that there was an issue with them and they were replacing them. Would make sense that they may issue a formal recall...

I guess you will have to see what happens when the new one arrives.

It's difficult to say without seeing the car. I'd say the issue is programming.
The used Sam may be from a slightly different model and so the fuel sender settings need changing.
The new recon Sam's either aren't being programmed correctly or you have a bad connection somewhere. Maybe a mis...
