A bit more, on the topic of running cost.
RTF is £290 on the R231 350 . So 'whoopee' in comparison to the R230 500. In fact the RFT refund from the 500 has more than covered the new RFT!!
The car insurance came as a major (and welcome....!!) surprise.
Just to pad out the story.... We are OLD...
The deed is done!
So the 2008 R230 500SL morphs into a 2014 R231 350SL AMG.
Same in many respects; Iridium Silver, pan. roof, air scarf, etc.
Changes? Reversing camera and a colour screen. V6, not V8. Down 90+ BHP but slightly quicker 0 to 60 (they tell me...). MPG up by about one third. Road...
Magic news! Thank you.
Must confess, my R230 did not leak. Maybe the 2008 'facelift' helped?
I used the 'mesh' solution on the top of the air box, rather than the proposed 'circumcision' of the bottom of the drain pipe in the wheel arch.
The boot seals seemed to be OK throughout 6 years...
My R230 is about to 'leave the building'. For six years it's been fun and frustrating. Exhilarating and enervating.
And 'Now is the time to say goodbye....'
After some major soul-searching and a good deal of research there appears to be nothing available to ease my addiction, so an R231 arrives...
Hi Guys,
I'm about to take delivery of an R231 (replacing my R230) so was interested to read about LEAKS!
Any relevant news on the topic (or any other) would be most welcome; 'Fore-warned and fore-armed....' etc.
In particular, does the R231 have the same 'AIr Box' arrangement next to the engine...
Well; here we are at the dawn of 2022 and I have just finished replacing two (yes; TWO) CR2025 batterieS in the key fob of my 2008 R230 SL500.
Big deal?
Having watched (and been misled and mystified by) several YouTube instruction videos on the topic I decided to expand a bit on matter.
The...
First; a reply to Andrew B. I was intrigued to read your list of 'Potential systems requiring normalizing' and wondered which 'document states:' that list?
The good news (just maybe..!) is that when I reconnected my Consumer battery (full Saga above' dated 5 March 2021) it was only necessary...
'Here we are again'.... Boot battery et al.
An update on the consequences of Deep Freeze which started on 13 January 2021.
Service and 'Star' session with my Covid nervous (and quite right too) Merc.specialist became due and passed without incident. No faults other than low voltage warnings...
Very many thanks chaps for all your useful input. All these arcane factors only come to the attention of the truly dedicated.
Or, in my case, dessicated; which is how the car is kept relatively dry, at least on the inside. It does not appear to leak from the various well-documented points. But...
Heater/ Air box drain problems:
After clearing out the detritus which has doubtless accumulated in the box, (Merc. fitted a too-big grill) get some fine plastic mesh from eBay and cut/ fit over the standard grill.
Works like a charm. Plenty of fresh air, even through the finer mesh, no more...
So we are now booked in for a plug-in diagnosis in two day's time.
Exciting times indeed: and an update.
A Sunday morning pilgrimage to get the paper and drop off the wife's empties at the bottle bank ground to an embarrassing halt.
I mentioned, in the earlier 'first contact' report that the...
Well, it could be.....
The CTEK has completed the task (MK7 'float' achieved) but regretfully no joy with the Central Locking or the boot lid.
And it's 'rain stopped play' too; so further investigations must wait until tomorrow.
Any suggestions about how an amateur sleuth might begin such...
Well. the 'car' is still certainly a 'conundrum'.
And a bit of a 'B' too.
Ever impatient, with an essential need for some kitchen light bulbs, (to keep 'er indoors slightly mollified) I nipped out to click and collect.
The car and I skipped lightly, and quite enjoyably, over the necessary 14...
The 'state of play' is now up to Mk6 on the CTEK, so we're getting there, at least in terms of charge state.
The consumer battery was new two years ago, so I doubt that another new one is required just yet...
We'll see what tomorrow and a full charge brings.
Just been out to check on the state of play.
Hit the unlock key fob and received the usual wake up grumble from under the bonnet, but no door unlock.
Lifted the (unlatched) boot lid (It's heavy Man!) and the CTEK is on '4'.
Lowered the boot lid (hope the interior light goes out when in unlatched...
Cheers for this.
Yep.
Checked the key-fob battery.
Waiting to see how we get on when the boot battery gets 'up to speed'...
Was it Oates who said; 'I might be some time....'?
